Baldramsdorf lies at the foot of Goldeck and combines a distinctive castle history with crafts, church art and mountain activities. There are different points of interest to explore as you plan your visit: discover cultural and historical details in the village and its districts, while Goldeck invites you to go hiking or enjoy winter sports, depending on the season.
Ortenburg Castle and crafts
Ortenburg Castle was completed in 1140 on a rocky outcrop east of Baldramsdorf, at an altitude of 740 m. It was once the largest castle in Carinthia. The name Ortenburg is also associated with the 1st Carinthian Museum of Crafts in Ortenburg Castle, the “Paternschloß”, in Unterhaus. The museum is dedicated to the history of traditional crafts and trades.
The museum presents more than 40 crafts and trades across over 30 workshops or departments in around 700 m² of exhibition space. The workshop displays are based on historical examples. Visual documents, personal accounts, photographs, diagrams, panels and master craftsman certificates convey the character of the workshops; consultations with craftspeople also inform the design. The museum thus offers a tangible insight into various traditional fields of work and how they are presented.
Church art spanning different periods
The parish church of Baldramsdorf is a striking Late Gothic church building. According to an inscription, it was vaulted with great skill in 1522 by master builder Laurenz Rieder. The freestanding west tower has Late Gothic lower storeys; its upper storey and spire date from 1885. Inside, an elaborate net-rib vault spans two octagonal pillars and wall pillars. The north choir has a net-rib vault, while the south choir has a star-rib vault.
Other places in the municipality also preserve distinctive artistic details. The Baldramsdorf Lenten cloth is dated 1555 and comprises 39 picture panels. The branch church in Gendorf houses a statuette of St Nicholas from the mid-15th century; the branch church in Rosenheim features depictions of the Holy Trinity.
The chapel on Lampersberg has a flat ceiling with colourful stencil paintings and inscriptions from the early 16th century. From Rosenheim, St Lambert’s Chapel on Lampersberg can be reached on foot via a forest track in about one hour. The approximate walking time gives you a useful estimate for planning this outing.
Experience Goldeck in every season
Goldeck, at 2,142 m, can be reached by gondola. In summer, the mountain offers hiking opportunities; in winter, skiing and snowboarding. The “Talbahn Goldeck” circulating cable car takes visitors directly to the reservoir in the Goldeck hiking area. Check the seasonal operating schedule before your trip. Goldeck Hut can also be reached on foot from the lower station of the Goldeck cable car in Schwaig, in the municipality of Baldramsdorf; take current mountain conditions into account when planning.
Compare routes and time frames
Different route details are available for different kinds of outings. The 1.2-kilometre forest and bee nature trail leads from Unterhaus towards Ortenburg Castle. From Rosenheim, you can reach St Lambert’s Chapel on foot via a forest track in about one hour. The Goldeck 5G Challenge, by contrast, is a one-day hike across five peaks: Goldeck, Martennock, Staff, Eckwand and Latschur. The distance, approximate walking time and one-day format can help you choose activities that fit your plans.
Cycling along the Drau Cycle Path is another leisure activity associated with Baldramsdorf. Alongside cultural and historical attractions, you can also choose mountain activities and cycling.
