Stampfen is a hamlet in the municipality of Mörtschach and a reference point for various hiking routes. The Stampfen footpath initially follows an asphalt surface, then continues along a small hiking trail to the vicinity of the Schwaiger inn. This change of surface is a useful point of reference when planning; local trail conditions may vary seasonally. The third stage of the Alpe-Adria-Trail includes Stampfen in a different way and continues from there to Mörtschach. The surfaces also differ.
The route on Stage 3
Stage 3 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail follows the Glocknerradweg cycle path to the hamlet of Stampfen. There, the route leaves the cycle path and crosses the Möll via a wooden bridge. Immediately after the bridge over the Möll, it crosses the main road. After Stampfen, the stage continues to Mörtschach along a meadow path, partly on wooden boardwalks. For navigation, keep the sequence in mind: the road comes immediately after the river crossing; later, the path surface changes and includes sections of boardwalk. Check the trail markers and conditions before setting out. Weather events can affect bridge conditions, and crossing the main road requires the usual caution.
Hiking with different destinations in mind
The Stampfen circular hiking trail begins on the Guggenberger circular route and heads towards Mörtschach. A mountain hike titled “Descent from the Wangenitzseehütte to Mörtschach” reaches the first mountain farms in the Stampfen district. From Stampfen, the mountain hike leads to the centre of Mörtschach via the paved mountain road or signposted footpaths. This gives you several route options: the connection to the Guggenberger circular route, the first farms in the district, or the town centre. Before setting out, consider whether you would prefer to orient yourself by a starting point, a direction, or a specific destination area.
Local traditions and events
Culture and events can also play a part in planning your trip. A report from 2022 describes an annual procession at Pentecost to the Moarskapelle chapel in the Pirkach-Stampfen area. The Mörtschach Sports Union organises ice-stock tournaments, sled races, children’s tractor races, small-sided tournaments, and giant table-football tournaments. Pentecost is the recurring reference point for the procession; for a particular tournament, its specific date matters. Check the relevant date in advance if you would like to plan your trip around such an occasion.
Stays and finding a holiday apartment
When looking for a holiday apartment in Stampfen, it helps to decide on your priorities first: would you like to focus on the hiking trails, or travel for a particular local tradition or club tournament? If hiking is your focus, you can compare the different routes and check the trail markers and bridge conditions before setting out. If a festival or tournament determines your travel period, make sure you know the specific date before choosing your travel dates.
