The Egger meadows are considered a biodiversity hotspot because of their geology and the sustainable management of mountain hay meadows. Alpine pastures and mountain hay meadows also shape the cultural landscape here. Nature conservation and land use go hand in hand: biodiversity is linked both to the geology and to the way the land is managed. At Eggerwiesenkopf, a different geological feature takes center stage. Its slopes are known as landslide slopes. The two place names thus point to different aspects of the landscape: the meadows to biodiversity and land management, and Eggerwiesenkopf to the nature of its slopes.

Routes and orientation

The National Park panoramic map shows Egg and the Egger meadows within the same landscape. A road leads from Putschall to the Egger meadows; a road from Putschall also leads to the Gradenalm car park. The map also marks the “Nach Innen horchen” (“Listen Inward”) themed trail in the landscape around Egg and Putschall. The trail offers a thematic focus, while the hike to the hut can be planned according to its duration and its destination at 2,448 metres.

From the Gradenalm parking area, you can hike for about three hours to the Adolf NoĂźberger Hut at 2,448 metres. When planning your day, allow for the approximate duration as a separate, longer activity rather than treating the hike as a short stopover.

Getting to Putschall

Putschall can be reached from the Lienz or Mallnitz-Obervellach railway stations by buses 5144 and 5108. If you combine train and bus travel, check the timetable for your travel date, as schedules may change.

Farmsteads and architectural history

The Thalerhof in Egg combines preserved historic buildings with a later film history. The farmstead was preserved through the renovation of the residential and agricultural building, the mill, and the Brechelstube, a traditional flax-processing room that is now rarely found. The renovated complex thus includes both the residential and agricultural areas and other elements of the farmstead. Later, the Thalerhof served as a filming location for the movie “Der Schandfleck.” The preservation of the farmstead and its later use as a film set offer two different perspectives on this place.

The Maria Hilf branch church in Putschall was built in 1809. Its interior has a single nave, two bays, and a shallow dome. These terms describe its spatial layout: a single church nave divided into two bays and a shallow dome. The year it was built and its spatial form thus offer different points of reference for an architectural perspective on the church.

GroĂźkirchheim as a regional setting

GroĂźkirchheim lies in the Hohe Tauern National Park at an elevation of more than 1,000 metres. This places the specific place and landscape names around Egg within a broader national park and high-altitude context.
