The abbey’s history, castle architecture and a natural swimming lake give Sankt Georgen Am Längsee different points of interest for a stay. If you want to focus on culture, you can explore St. Georgen Abbey and Hochosterwitz Castle as two historical attractions; for a break by the water, Lake Längsee is a highlight in its own right. Taggenbrunn adds a boutique brunch and an e-bike experience ride to the selection.
Abbey and castle: different historical perspectives
St. Georgen Abbey on Lake Längsee has a history spanning more than 1,000 years. Its abbey church dates from the 14th century and features a Gothic interior and an impressive Baroque high altar. This brings two clearly distinct architectural styles together in one space: the Gothic design of the church interior and the Baroque altar as a particular focal point. The orientation trail connects the abbey gardens of St. Georgen in 16 stations and provides a separate focus within the abbey grounds alongside the church.
Hochosterwitz Castle is located within the municipality of Sankt Georgen Am Längsee and was built on a 150-metre-high limestone rock. It can be reached through 14 historically interesting castle gates or by a modern lift. If you are planning to visit the castle, check the access options before your visit. Municipal visitor information dated 20 September 2025 lists seven sculptures and installations by sculptors Andres Klimbacher and Helmut Machhammer along the art trail around the castle. The trail loops around the castle, so the art trail and access to the castle are two different aspects of a visit.
Route information for hiking and cycling
The municipal hiking and cycling map provides brief information about the routes. QR codes let you view each route on your smartphone; route details are also available as a PDF. You can also explore the map in three dimensions. For planning, this means you can start with the brief information and, if needed, consult the route view on your smartphone or the PDF details. As digital map features may be updated, check that they are currently available when planning your trip.
Lake Längsee: natural swimming lake and swimming options
Lake Längsee is a natural swimming lake. The Längsee lido has a 101-metre-long slide and a 3-metre-high diving tower. It also offers stand-up paddleboards, boat hire and a bathing island. The lido therefore offers a range of specific swimming and water activities in addition to the lake itself. Facilities may change following renovations, so check the information about the lido before your visit.
Taggenbrunn: brunch and e-bike experience
The boutique brunch at Taggenbrunn offers creative dishes made with regional ingredients and Taggenbrunn wines in the atmosphere of Taggenbrunn Castle. It takes place on the last Sunday of every month from 11:00 to 14:30. Check the date and make a reservation before your trip. Another kind of outing offered at Taggenbrunn is an e-bike experience ride through hills and vineyards. High-quality e-bikes are available to rent; each rental includes a helmet and a bike lock. Check availability and booking conditions in advance. For the brunch, the monthly date and time slot are key, while for the e-bike ride you can keep an eye on rental availability.
