Glödnitz combines a medieval church complex with hiking trails that offer different highlights: The forest hiking trail starts at the church and passes the Türkenmoos nature reserve; the Faillacher Kreuz circular trail offers viewpoints overlooking the town and its surroundings. There is also a natural bathing pond and the Flattnitz Alpine Water Trail in the municipal area. This gives you a clear choice for planning your trip between architectural and local history, moorland, viewpoints and water-themed attractions.
Church complex and local history
In 1043, Saint Hemma founded a Chapel of St Michael as the first church at the site of Glödnitz parish church. The church complex is one of the few well-preserved medieval fortified churches. The Glödnitz charnel house is a late Gothic, three-storey round building dating from around 1500. The charnel house was in the basement, the middle floor served as a chapel, and the upper floor was used for defensive purposes. The building thus combines burial, religious use and a defensive function. The church complex is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00.
The Amthof was the seat of the local administrator. The Glödnitz administrative district was responsible for the Glödnitz Valley for almost 400 years; its duties included collecting levies and assigning people to compulsory labour. The Görtschach Cross is also linked to the town’s religious history: The broad wayside chapel bears a life-size crucifix and is thought to date back at least to the 18th century. To this day, a procession travels there from Glödnitz parish church on the Monday of Rogation Days. If you plan to attend this tradition, check the exact annual dates locally in advance.
Hiking: moorland or viewpoints
The forest hiking trail starts at the church in Glödnitz and passes the Türkenmoos nature reserve. The moor lies northwest of the town on a level saddle at an elevation of about 1,000 metres and covers 19 hectares. It has been protected since 1986; its features include rare raised-bog plants. The route past the protected area gives this trail a clear focus on nature.
The Faillacher Kreuz circular trail offers a different highlight: its viewpoints look out over Glödnitz and the surrounding area. The key difference when choosing between the two trails described here is clear: the forest hiking trail passes the protected moor, while the views from Faillacher Kreuz take in the town and its surroundings.
More trails and a natural bathing pond
The Flattnitz Alpine Water Trail runs through the municipal area of Glödnitz. The hike is about 7.5 kilometres long, includes seven water-themed stations and has a gentle gradient. Trail conditions and facilities can change; check the latest information before setting out.
The named landscapes also differ in elevation: the Flattnitz plateau lies in the Gurktal Alps, within the municipal area of Glödnitz, at around 1,400 metres above sea level. Türkenmoos is at about 1,000 metres. This means the plateau and the moor represent different elevations within the municipal area.
The Glödnitz natural bathing pond adds swimming to hikes and cultural visits. The water is purified without chemical additives using a natural regeneration and plant-filtering area. The pond combines swimming with sports and leisure activities, providing another focus alongside the trails and local history.
