As a historic pass crossing in the Gurktal Alps, Flattnitz connects Carinthia and Styria. The village lies at around 1,400 m above sea level and can be reached via the well-maintained Flattnitzer LandesstraĂźe (L63). When choosing a destination, pass history, historic buildings and a range of opportunities for outdoor activities come together here. This can help you decide whether you would prefer to shape your stay around culture, circular trails or winter sports. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Flattnitz, these different themes can help guide you: the historic buildings offer a cultural focus, while circular trails and winter sports bring other activities to the fore.

Pass History and Historic Buildings

A Roman post road ran from Virunum on the Zollfeld through the Gurktal valley and over the Flattnitz pass to the north. The Roman post station Tarnasici is also identified with Flattnitz. The Church of St. John in Flattnitz is an Early Gothic rotunda built around 1330. Its architectural features include the main choir, two polygonal side apses and a fortified sacristy tower. Together with the former hospice annex to the west, it forms a picturesque group of buildings.

The Amtshaus (administrative building) was probably built in the 16th century and has been a listed monument since August 1966. It is one of Austria’s oldest Amtshäuser and is probably the oldest in Carinthia. The church was granted many indulgences in 1521. The term “rotunda” describes the building’s overall form; “main choir”, “side apses” and “sacristy tower” refer to individual architectural elements. The dates provide different points of comparison: the church was built around 1330, the indulgences date to 1521, and the Amtshaus was probably built in the 16th century. Its listing in August 1966, by contrast, marks a later protected status, not the date of construction.

Circular Trails by the Water

Lake Flattnitz lies amid coniferous forests and can be circled on a walking trail. The Almenwasserweg is 7.4 kilometres long and has seven interactive stations. Children in particular can play there with pumps and water channels. The Almenwasserweg is described in more detail by its length and interactive stations; at the lake, the focus is on walking around the body of water, which lies amid coniferous forests. The two options can therefore be distinguished by their interactive activities or the walk around the lake.

Winter Sports and Tours

Flattnitz offers winter sports enthusiasts a total of 10 km of cross-country ski trails in a sunny location. For alpine skiing, Adolf Isopp operates a drag lift and two slopes, particularly suitable for children and beginners. There are also tours and hikes for beginners and advanced hikers, reaching elevations of up to 1,860 m above sea level. These details can help you choose by activity: 10 km refers to the cross-country ski trail, two slopes to alpine skiing, while 1,860 m is the elevation reached by the tours and hikes. The distance, slopes and elevation therefore represent different ways to shape your stay.
