The Wabelsdorf Celtic Well is the surviving cult well of a Celtic-Roman temple sanctuary in the village of Wabelsdorf, within the municipality of Poggersdorf. It is considered the municipality’s oldest cultural and historical monument. Wabelsdorf is also home to the only known sanctuary of the Genius Cucullatus in Austria to date. This brings two different perspectives together: the well’s significance to the municipality’s history and the nationwide context of the Genius Cucullatus sanctuary. For travellers interested in archaeological cult sites, this creates a clear cultural focus when choosing where to visit.

Other cultural highlights

The Dhamma Light Pagoda stands on the southeastern edge of St. Michael, slightly elevated above the road to Wabelsdorf. Its location on the edge of the village and the direction of the road offer clear points of reference if you include this cultural site in your plans. The pagoda adds another cultural point of interest to the archaeological themes, without requiring you to attend any particular programme.

The International Meditation Center Austria was founded in 1990 by the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Meditation Society Austria. Ten-day meditation courses are held regularly at the centre; course schedules may change. If you are considering attending a course, check the dates before planning your trip. The centre is about half a kilometre from St. Michael ob der Gurk, in the direction of Wabelsdorf. The approximate distance and stated direction help you place it geographically.

Understanding the parish church’s architectural history

Poggersdorf Parish Church is a late Gothic chancel-tower church whose core dates from the 12th/13th century; it was given a Baroque makeover. A chancel-tower church is a church building with a tower above the chancel. Several features can thus be distinguished in Poggersdorf’s church: its architectural form, its late Gothic character and the older core building, which was later given a Baroque makeover. This layering over time makes the church interesting to travellers who want to appreciate not only individual buildings but also their architectural development.

Landscape and a place to rest

Poggersdorf is defined by its broad green spaces and wooded hills. The landscape, alongside the individual cultural sites, is part of the municipality’s character. One specific detail to help visitors find their way is the Roman stone, now covered by a roof, beside the wayside shrine; it is often used as a place to rest. Here, a historic object and a designated resting place come together: the site is interesting not only as a monument but also as a place to take a break. This sets it apart from the architectural focus on the parish church or the archaeological emphasis in Wabelsdorf.

Plan your stay around your main interest

Each theme raises different considerations for planning a trip. If you are taking a course at the International Meditation Center Austria, the ten-day duration and course dates are important points of reference. For a cultural history trip, archaeological sites or church architecture may be the deciding factors; the green spaces and wooded hills will appeal to travellers who also want to take the landscape into account. So, if you are looking for a holiday apartment in Poggersdorf, it helps to first decide on the main focus of your stay and tailor your search accordingly.
