Schiefling Am See offers two distinctive points of reference when planning a trip: Lake Wörthersee, which borders the market municipality to the south for around four kilometres, and the 772 m-high Kathreinkogel, the municipality’s most prominent geographical feature. This brings the lakeshore and landscape together with archaeological traces and architectural history. For your stay, you can consider whether to focus on the Trattnigteich, hiking or the archaeological sites on the Kathreinkogel.
Water and landscape
The Trattnigteich is near Schiefling. This small artificial body of water has largely natural, wooded banks. The north shore is particularly important for local swimming. The pond is also regarded as a fishing destination in Schiefling am Wörthersee. Swimming and fishing are two different ways to enjoy the same body of water; which one matters to you can shape your visit plans.
The Keutschacher Seental Natura Trail runs from Schiefling to Hafnersee. Hiking routes also pass through the internationally recognised “Moor and Lake Landscape of the Keutschacher Seental” Ramsar site. The area is home to many rare plant and animal species. For finding your way around, the trail’s stated endpoints and the hiking routes through the Ramsar site offer two specific ways to explore the landscape: a named route from Schiefling to Hafnersee and paths through an area with distinctive plant and animal species.
Archaeology and churches on the Kathreinkogel
A settlement dating from the 12th century BC was excavated on the Kathreinkogel. The archaeological complex includes, among other things, a fortress with an Early Christian church and a cemetery to the southwest. Austria’s only wishing tree also stands on the summit: visitors hang their wishes on wooden plaques on the tree. The mountain’s archaeological significance is thus connected with a distinctive visitor tradition.
The branch church of St Catherine on the Kathreinkogel is a single-nave Romanesque building with a Late Gothic choir and rib vault. It was first mentioned in a document in 1385. The Romanesque structure and Late Gothic choir give the church distinct architectural features. The parish church of St Michael in Schiefling is also a listed church building.
The House of Archaeology displays exhibits from excavations on the Kathreinkogel and at other archaeological sites in Carinthia. It can be reached from the Kreuzwirt car park in about 30 minutes on foot. The exhibits and the archaeological sites on the Kathreinkogel thus offer two different perspectives on archaeology.
More activities in the area
The Generations Park offers nature experiences, sporting activities and agility training. Opportunities for exercise and play, as well as areas to sit and relax, are provided for everyone from toddlers to adults. The park adds another way to spend time in Schiefling alongside its cultural and landscape attractions, so your stay need not focus solely on churches and archaeological sites.
A Wörthersee boat tour stop is located by the “Weißes Rössl” beach café. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable in advance. This lets you consider boat services as a possible part of your plans for the area without confusing them with hiking routes and visitor attractions.
