When visiting Wurdach, you can choose from a range of hiking experiences: viewpoints on Kö1, a chapel loop on Kö7, and a forest trail through the Turiawald towards Wurdach. Also on offer are the traditional cultural landscape of the Sattnitz ridge, archaeological finds and the local fruit tree nursery. If you are looking for accommodation, you can choose based on the theme you want to shape your stay. The described trails differ in their views, destinations and return routes; checking the route details can help you plan your day.

Hiking Trails with Views and Different Destinations

The Kö1 hiking tour – Scops Owl Nature Trail reaches viewpoints overlooking the Keutschach Valley, the Nock Mountains as far as the Koralpe, and the Rosental Valley with the Karawanks. The route heads towards Wurdach and returns to the starting point via a paved panoramic trail. The information panels along the nature trail were completely renewed in 2024. When choosing your route, you can take both the viewpoints and the described return route into account.

The Kö7 hiking tour – Chapel Loop Trail follows the edge of the forest to the Hubertus Chapel and returns to Wurdach via a sunken lane. Compared with Kö1, this route focuses on the chapel destination and the return through the sunken lane; on Kö1, the viewpoints and the paved panoramic trail on the way back are the defining features of the route described. This gives you the choice between a hike focused on views and a loop to the chapel.

Another route description covers a 2.3 km undulating forest trail through the Turiawald towards Wurdach. The trail markings are 30A and 36B. The stated length provides a concrete measure for planning; at the same time, the forest trail differs from the two Kö tours described in both its route and character.

Cultural Landscape and Nature Conservation

Wurdach lies in the traditional cultural landscape of the Sattnitz ridge. Its features include scattered fruit trees near farms and solitary trees. Those interested in the agricultural character of a landscape while hiking will find a perspective here that complements the viewpoints and trail destinations.

The Scops Owl conservation project aims to preserve the cultural landscape and improve the Scops Owl’s habitat, food supply and nesting opportunities. The project thus combines landscape conservation with specific goals for a bird species.

Archaeological Traces and Regional Culture

Several skeletons and iron knives found in Wurdach point to early medieval settlement in what is now the municipal area. These finds add an archaeological time frame to the present-day hiking trails and landscape themes.

At the Wurdach fruit tree nursery, traditional tall-stem varieties adapted to the local altitude are grafted, grown and sold. Working with these varieties is a specific agricultural aspect of the region and complements the scattered fruit trees as a feature of the cultural landscape.

The Chapel of Zum Waldfrieden – St. Hubertus is also a cultural landmark: it was built using natural building materials. Together with the Kö7 hiking tour to the Hubertus Chapel, it offers a starting point for visitors who would like to explore architecture and regional culture as part of their hike.
