The municipality of Ossiach lies on the southern shore of Lake Ossiach, surrounded by the hiking and skiing mountain Gerlitzen and the Ossiach Tauern. Its appeal to visitors ranges from the history of the Benedictine abbey to summer music events, hiking and cycling trails, and boat trips on the lake. Abbey History and Summer Music

Ossiach Abbey was founded around 1024 as a Benedictine monastery. The Baroque building of Ossiach Abbey Church is 31 metres long. From October 2006 to June 2009, the abbey was revitalised and expanded with an adjoining new building to become the music and events centre of the Carinthian Music Academy at Ossiach Abbey. Since 1969, musical events of the “Carinthian Summer” have been held at the abbey during the summer months. This gives culture lovers two points of interest: the historic monastery and a recurring summer programme. Hiking and Cycling

Stages 19 and 20 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail pass through Ossiach. The Ossiach Gorge Trail starts in the town centre, leads to Tauern Pond and can be followed back to the starting point via Tauernstraße or a trail. The Ossiacher See Cycle Route R2/R2A also passes through Ossiach. The route information differs: for the gorge trail, the start, destination and return options are specified; the stages and the cycle route pass through the town. Opening hours for the mountain bike trails are published as 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from 1 May to 15 September and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from 16 September to 31 October. Check the hours again for later seasons.

Leisure Activities and Boat Trips on the Lake

The Ossiach Lake Climbing Forest is a five-minute walk from the centre of Ossiach. The Familywald Ossiacher See is a nature adventure park in a beech forest. Its attractions include the “Fly-Line” forest roller coaster, a TREENETS adventure, a treetop walkway, a forest playground, tree houses and an adventure trail with various play stations. As opening arrangements may change seasonally, check which activities are operating on your travel dates before visiting.

Ossiach Lake Shipping offers trips on the MS Ossiach and MS Gerlitze, giving you a special perspective on the lake. Alongside walking and cycling routes, boat trips offer another way to spend your time. If you plan to take a boat trip, check the timetable in advance.
