Turracherhöhe is located in the heart of the UNESCO Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. Visitors can choose between different highlights: hiking routes by Alpine lakes and through Swiss pine forests, trails connected to the region’s mining tradition, and winter activities ranging from cross-country skiing to BergAUFrodeln. You can first decide whether hiking routes, winter activities or travel by public transport will be the deciding factor.

The Turracher 3-Lake Trail is a hiking loop connecting Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee. It is also a trail for the senses through Austria’s largest contiguous Swiss pine forest and around the three Alpine lakes. For a different kind of hike, try the accessible AlmZeit circular trail: it starts right at the mountain station of the Panoramabahn and takes about two hours. Allow around two hours for this circular trail. The 3-Lake Trail connects the lakes and Swiss pine forest; the AlmZeit circular trail is accessible and takes about two hours.

The Barbara Trail offers another focus. This panoramic trail follows in the footsteps of Turracher’s historic mining tradition. Nearby, in Turrach, the “Holz und Eisen” mining museum illustrates the region’s mining history. While the Barbara Trail takes the tradition as its theme, the museum explores its regional history.

Winter Loops and Tobogganing

In winter, the options vary in activity and route format. A 12 km ski loop circles Turracher See and reaches an altitude of 2,020 m. Turracher Höhe also has 16 km of cross-country ski trails. For BergAUFrodeln, the Übungswiesenlift takes guests uphill on special toboggans before the fast descent begins. This gives you a choice of a ski loop, cross-country trails and a lift-assisted toboggan run when planning your day.

Experiences on the High Plateau

Nocky’s AlmZeit, an interactive children’s adventure world, is located on the high plateau of Turracher Höhe. It includes two wooden marble runs: one is 50 metres long and the other 30 metres. The Nocky Flitzer operates in both summer and winter. At the gold panning facility on Turracher Höhe, visitors can search for real gold nuggets. Gold pans are available to borrow, and any pieces you find can be taken home.

Getting There by Bus and Train

During the Carinthian summer holidays, bus route 5234 runs from Feldkirchen railway station via Ebene Reichenau directly to Turracher Höhe, stopping at the Panoramabahn. It runs daily except Saturdays. Check the timetable before travelling. When travelling by train, take the Murtalbahn from Unzmarkt to Predlitz; from there, you can continue by taxi or station shuttle. As connections and shuttle availability may change, check these before travelling as well.
