Clusius in Güssing: Work and Legacy
In 1583, Carolus Clusius created the work “Stirpium Nomenclator Pannonicus” in Güssing. Seven panels distributed around the town of Güssing provide information about his life, work and significance. This links a precisely named work with the botanist’s history and his connection to Güssing.
Emigration, Dialect and Monastery History
The Josef Reichl and Emigration Museum is housed in the old court mill building and comprises two museums. The Emigration Museum documents the emigration of thousands of Burgenlanders, mainly to the USA, at the beginning of the last century. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to Josef Reichl, a Güssing dialect poet. The museum thus presents two distinct topics side by side: the history of emigration and the dialect of a poet from Güssing.
The Franciscan monastery in Güssing was founded in 1648/49 by Adam Count Batthyány I. Alongside Clusius’ 1583 work and the emigration discussed in the museum, which took place at the beginning of the last century, the founding of the monastery offers a glimpse into different periods of Güssing’s history.
Güssing Ponds: Wetland and Biodiversity
At the Güssing Ponds, the focus shifts from historical figures and migration to a wetland. It is home to more than 30 dragonfly species, as well as numerous frogs, toads, fire-bellied toads and newts. The Güssing Ponds Ramsar protected area is also an important breeding site for waterbirds. Nature enthusiasts will find both a designated protected area and specific groups of animals named here.
Eco-Energy and Cultural Events
As part of eco-energy tourism, the European Center for Renewable Energy offers presentations on the Güssing model as well as tours of demonstration facilities in the ökoEnergieland. Booking in advance is recommended. The Güssing biomass district heating plant is also part of the eco-energy tourism program. This topic therefore includes both presentations about the model and tours of facilities.
The Güssing Cultural Summer was founded in 2001 by Frank Hoffmann. Events take place at the Güssing Cultural Centre and the open-air museum Ensemble Gerersdorf. Musical Güssing is a separate event: since the 1980s, it has staged musical productions at the end of every summer. If you would like to plan your stay around a performance, check the dates for your chosen period.
