Eberau’s village square forms the forecourt of the moated castle complex of Eberau Castle. The defensive complex surrounding the moated castle was once the largest in Austria. This connection between the village square and the castle complex offers a clear starting point for exploring the town’s history.

Cultural History in Eberau and the Surrounding Area

The Catholic parish church of St Joseph is listed as a protected monument in the Burgenland monument register dated 19 June 2026. The Holy Trinity is also protected as a monument. The pillory on the main square dates back to the 17th century. The itinerant book printer Johannes Manlius stayed in Eberau from 1587 to 1590. Together, these historical connections range from protected religious buildings to an object on the main square and a stay spanning several years in the town’s history.

Gaas and Maria Weinberg also offer cultural and historical points of interest. The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary in Gaas was built in 1155. In Maria Weinberg, the cemetery chapel is an old charnel house dating from the 14th century. Maria Weinberg is also considered a centre of Marian devotion in southern Burgenland. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views across the vineyards and the gently rolling landscape of southern Burgenland. The two places offer different highlights: in Gaas, the pilgrimage church dating from 1155 is a historical landmark; in Maria Weinberg, Marian devotion, the charnel house and views of the landscape come together. The timeline runs from the pilgrimage church in Gaas, built in 1155, through the 14th-century charnel house, Johannes Manlius’ stay of several years in Eberau from 1587 to 1590, and the 17th-century pillory. A charnel house is an ossuary; the term explains the distinctive name of the cemetery chapel in Maria Weinberg.

Wine Country and Regional Dining

Vineyards and Kellerstöckl (traditional winegrowers’ cottages) shape the landscape around Eberau. Winten and Gaas also reflect the area’s connection to viticulture. Winten Hill Chapel lies in the Weinidylle, Austria’s smallest wine-growing region, surrounded by a rich variety of local grapes, including Welschriesling, Uhudler and Blaufränkisch. Gaas is also strongly shaped by viticulture. Several Buschenschänken (traditional wine taverns) invite visitors to stop for a meal and showcase the region’s wine and food culture.

Cycling Routes and Getting Around

Cyclists can choose between two different routes: “Genuss im Uhudlerland” (Enjoy the Uhudler Region) starts in Eberau and can be cycled along some sections; the Furmint Trail runs by bicycle through the municipalities of Eberau and Kulm. Eberau is also on the Pinkatal Wine Road and is a good starting point for exploring the South Burgenland Wine Idyl. E-bikes are available to rent in Eberau at the Landgasthof Buch. Check whether rentals are available before your trip.
