Anyone wishing to explore Heiligenbrunn’s architectural and wine culture will find a major focal point in the Cellar Quarter. The timber wine cellars, plastered with clay and thatched with straw, date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Other highlights include the spring that gave the village its name, activities centered on Uhudler, and two nature attractions. You can plan your stay around whichever is most important to you: historic architecture, wine or hiking.

The Cellar Quarter and Local History

Today, 80 listed wine cellars remain in the Cellar Quarter. Their construction is characterized by three specific features: timber framing, clay plaster and thatched roofs. The Cellar Quarter has been a protected landscape since 1969. This means that protection extends beyond individual cellars to the ensemble as a whole. You can explore the Cellar Quarter from several angles: its architectural style, historical dating and protected status.

At the entrance to the Cellar Quarter stands a landmark described as the “World’s Largest Uhudler Grape.” Chainsaw artist Günter Friedrich created it in 2021 from a dead oak tree about 200 years old. A severe storm had badly damaged the tree in 2017. The landmark is intended to highlight the connection between Heiligenbrunn, winegrowing and the adjacent Cellar Quarter.

Another link to the village’s history is the spring that gave Heiligenbrunn its name. It is still located below the parish church, at the foot of a small chapel dedicated to Saint Ulrich. The village’s name and the spring’s location offer a different historical connection from the cellars and winegrowing.

Uhudler and Cellar Tours

On a cellar tour, you can choose between a tour of the show cellar and the “Spring–Show Cellar–Cellar Lane” tour. An Uhudler tasting can be added to a show cellar tour on request and is limited to a maximum of 30 people. If you would like to include this option, request it as an add-on and confirm the arrangements before your trip.

Uhudler is produced around Heiligenbrunn, Eltendorf and Moschendorf. You can taste and buy it at any establishment marked with the distinctive Uhudler flag. The flag offers a practical guide when looking for a place to taste or purchase Uhudler, while a tasting at the show cellar is linked to a tour and available as an optional extra. Check availability with the individual establishment before visiting.

Nature and Hiking in Heiligenbrunn

Nature and outdoor activities also offer different experiences in Heiligenbrunn. A wetland covering more than 1 ha offers visitors a chance to explore the municipality’s fauna and flora. The Uhudler Loop is a 3.4 km hiking route in Heiligenbrunn. The difference is clear: the loop has a specified length, while the wetland focuses on exploring flora and fauna. You can decide whether you prefer a hike with a stated distance or an exploration of nature.
