The parish and pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary in Gaas was built in 1155 and extended and remodeled in 1524. During renovation work, Romanesque architectural elements from a former castle chapel were discovered repeatedly; they may be connected with Kertes Castle, first mentioned in 1221.
Churches and Chapels with Their Own Building History
The listed Catholic branch church of St. Anne stands in the center of Gaas and serves as the village church dedicated to Saint Anne. It was built as a chapel in 1739 and extended in 1892. The single-nave building has a recessed apse and a projecting eastern tower with an onion dome. A single-nave building is arranged around a main nave; the recessed apse is set back from this space.
The cemetery chapel in Maria Weinberg is an old charnel house dating from the 14th century. The listed cemetery of Gaas-Maria Weinberg is also home to the Candle Chapel. Its altar houses a Crucifixion group from the 17th century; an ossuary lies below the chapel.
The war memorial in the listed cemetery of Gaas-Maria Weinberg commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It is located close to the parish and pilgrimage church of Maria Weinberg and the Candle Chapel, and was made in Heinrich Czerny’s workshop in Vienna.
The Triangle Chapel stands on the farm track between Gaas and Maria Weinberg. It has a very rare triangular shape and was blessed on June 10, 2012, by parish priest Mag. Karl Schlögl. The sacred building history thus spans churches and cemetery buildings through to a chapel with an unusual floor plan.
Circular Trail and Chapels Along the Way
The Gaas–Maria Weinberg circular trail starts in the center of Gaas and is about 7.80 km long. It passes the listed family chapel in Gaas-Weinberg. The approximate distance provides a practical guide for planning your time; check the route locally for possible changes. There are three chapels in total on the ascent over Loderberg to the pilgrimage church of Maria Weinberg. When planning, you can therefore use different points of reference: the approximate length of the circular trail and the number of chapels on the ascent over Loderberg.
