From Güssing Castle, the view stretches across the town, to the Güssing Fish Ponds Ramsar Site and far across the Hungarian Plain. In Güssing, the history of the castle and its families sits alongside memories of emigration and nature-related themes. This offers several ways to plan your visit: exhibitions and the crypt add a cultural dimension, while the circular hiking trail and nature park offer other ways to spend time outdoors.

Güssing Castle: Exhibition and Views

The permanent exhibition “The Pelican above Güssing” presents the history of the Batthyány family and the castle in nine rooms. The exhibition is presented in German, Hungarian and English. A visit offers an opportunity to explore the history of the family and the castle. A funicular elevator provides comfortable access to the castle, so you do not have to tackle the steep climb. From there, the view takes in the town, the Güssing Fish Ponds in the Ramsar area and the Hungarian Plain—a sweeping vista of these named landscapes.

Monastery, Crypt and Town History

The Franciscan monastery was founded in 1648/49 by Adam Count Batthyány I. Among its notable historical features are a library with 3,500 books and the crypt of the Franciscan church and Güssing Monastery. It is the final resting place of the Batthyány count family. After the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna, it is Austria’s second-largest family crypt. The monastery’s founding history, library and crypt each offer a distinct connection to the history of the Batthyány family.

The Emigration Museum documents the emigration of thousands of Burgenlanders, especially to the United States, at the beginning of the 20th century. It is housed in the building of the old court mill. The second part of the exhibition, dedicated to Güssing dialect poet Josef Reichl, is also located there. In his works, Reichl described the fate of people living in the border region. Together, the two parts of the exhibition offer different perspectives: on emigration and on literary depictions of life in the border region.

Cultural Programme and the Legacy of Carolus Clusius

The Güssing Cultural Centre has been in existence since 1977 and offers a broad programme across several stages and event spaces. Well-known musicals are performed there every year. If a musical is important to your travel plans, check the current programme before your trip; the annual performance tradition does not specify a particular event date.

Botanist Carolus Clusius is also a subject of interest in Güssing. Seven information panels distributed around the town tell the story of his life, work and significance. The flower beds along the Carolus Clusius trail add to this botanical theme with seasonal plants that Clusius discovered or catalogued. The panels focus on Clusius himself; the plants displayed in the beds vary with the seasons.

Circular Hiking Trail and Nature Park

The circular hiking trail around the Güssing Fish Ponds Ramsar Site invites visitors to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace and learn about the area’s natural treasures. Its focus sets it apart from the exhibitions and historic sites: the emphasis is on the nature of the Ramsar area and sharing knowledge about it. From the castle, you can take in the landscape across the town and fish ponds to the Hungarian Plain; the circular hiking trail offers its own way to explore the area.

Güssing is a starting point for longer hikes or cycling tours through the nature park in the Weinidylle region. This regional setting complements the local attractions with longer excursions in nature, without presupposing a particular route or distance. Whether you are weighing up culture or outdoor activities, you will find different ways to spend your time in Güssing: the castle, exhibitions and crypt on one hand, the circular hiking trail and nature park on the other.
