The Department of La Paz lies in the northwest of Entre Ríos Province and borders the Río Paraná along its entire western side. The city of La Paz, which shares its name with the department, is in northern Entre Ríos, right on the riverbank. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both areas: the city focuses on its connection to the river, culture and leisure, while the department has additional natural attractions.

Fishing on the Paraná and enjoying the outdoors

La Paz is a destination for fishing for dorado and surubí. Fishing spots are available from the riverbank and by boat, where you can catch large dorado with a fly rod. This offers two different perspectives on fishing: from the bank or from the water. Kayak fishing is also part of local practice. Many residents regularly take their kayaks out on the water to try to catch dorado or surubí. Curuzú Chalí Island is a ten-minute boat ride north of the city. It covers 15,000 hectares and is a reserve for sport fishing.

In the city, Parque de la Aventura is a great place for hiking and observing flora and fauna. Piedras Blancas, known as “El Balcón del Paraná,” is also in the Department of La Paz. Its landscape includes steep riverbanks, warm sandy beaches, lush vegetation and special views of the Río Paraná. You can observe flora and fauna at Laguna El Brete in Piedras Blancas, which is also suitable for recreational activities. Nature lovers can choose from a city park, a lagoon and a striking river landscape.

Art, culture and crafts in La Paz

The Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes y Casa de la Cultura in the city of La Paz houses more than 600 works of Argentine art. In 2018, the building was declared part of the historic architectural heritage of Entre Ríos Province. The Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes and the Casa de la Cultura host events, exhibitions and cultural workshops throughout the year. The annual program also includes temporary and permanent exhibitions, as well as two art competitions. If you plan to attend a specific event, check the latest dates in advance.

Public art is also part of the city experience: urban murals can be found in various locations around La Paz and are considered cultural attractions. Be sure to distinguish between two craft institutions. The Centro de Artesanos La Paz is next to the Museo Regional and offers products made by local craftspeople, as well as courses to promote their craft. Check whether the courses are currently being offered before visiting. The Casa del Artesano provides local craftspeople with a place to exhibit and sell their work.

Thermal baths, a summer beach and a January triathlon

The thermal baths can also be considered on two levels: Entre Ríos is Argentina’s National Capital of Thermal Circuits. In La Paz itself, the waters of Termas de La Paz are of marine origin and highly mineralized.

Playa La Curtiembre beach at Parque La Curtiembre is open for use in summer; check the current beach regulations before visiting. La Paz has hosted the Triatlón Internacional every January since 1985. If you want to plan your trip around the competition, check the latest event dates.
