The Laguna de los Padres Municipal Nature Reserve combines nature conservation with a range of recreational uses. It is dedicated to protecting and preserving flora, fauna and water bodies, while also providing for recreation, sports, cultural activities, and scientific and educational activities. The lagoon is suitable for rowing on the Alberto Valle course and is considered an important venue for sport fishing.

The lagoon and getting around

Four authorized entrances provide access to different areas: the main entrance is on Avenida de Los Misioneros. The three secondary entrances are via Camino del Cabildo Indígena to the José Hernández Municipal Museum, via Calle Helmer Uranga to the island area, and via Camino Cacique Cangapol to Avenida Padre Luis Varetto, in the direction of Sierra de los Padres. If you are planning a visit, check the access conditions before setting out.

The José Hernández Municipal Museum is located on Route 226 at kilometer 13.2, at the second entrance to the lagoon via Camino del Cabildo Indígena. Its permanent exhibition covers early settlement, new population groups, the first Indigenous settlements and missions, the cacique Cangapol El Bravo, and the region's rural history and Estancia Laguna de los Padres. This offers a perspective on the area's settlement and cultural history through its landscape.

Routes and landscapes

In the southern part of the Partido, Route 11 runs along the coast. Wooded areas characterize stretches of the road, and panoramic views are a notable feature. Route 226 offers a different landscape, with rolling terrain, lagoons, streams and sierras, as well as tourism and recreational activities for enjoying nature, supported by comprehensive infrastructure.

Route 88, Camino de las Canteras and Camino San Francisco de Asís are also paved roads. They pass through areas of fruit and vegetable cultivation, as well as quarries. The Sierras del Acha, de Valdez, de los Padres, de los Difuntos and de la Peregrina rise among cultivated fields and old groups of trees. At 230 meters, Sierra de la Peregrina is the highest of these elevations.

Architectural heritage and history in Mar del Plata

Casa sobre el Arroyo, locally also known as Casa del Puente, was designed and built between 1943 and 1945 by Argentine architect Amancio Williams and architect Delfina Gálvez Bunge. It is designated a National Historic and Artistic Monument, a Cultural Heritage Site of the Province of Buenos Aires, a municipal heritage site recognized for its cultural and natural value, and a forest reserve. The park comprises two adjoining city blocks crossed by the historic course of Arroyo Las Chacras, and serves as an active environmental reserve for wild animal and plant species.

Advance registration is required for guided tours of Casa del Puente, with a limit of 30 participants per time slot. Dates and registration details may change, so it is advisable to check them before your visit. Villa Ortiz Basualdo offers a different architectural style: this residence, built in 1909 in the Norman Picturesque style, houses the Juan Carlos Castagnino Municipal Art Museum.

Other historic landmarks include the Reducción de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Puelches, founded by Jesuits in the mid-18th century and considered an early settlement of Mar del Plata, and the Santa Cecilia Chapel, built in 1873 as the city's first solid building. Torreón del Monje, at Punta Piedras at the foot of Loma de Stella Maris, resembles an old fortress and evokes the legend that made it immortal.

The port also shapes Mar del Plata's image: sea lions, seagulls, fishing boats, nets and traps feature along a visitor route. The port is also associated with seafood and maritime dishes. Depending on your interests, different facets of the Partido come to the fore: nature conservation and rowing at the lagoon, landscapes along the routes, or the architectural and port history of Mar del Plata.
