At Lake Shkodra, Grilë is designated as a bathing and recreation area; at the same time, the Albanian zone of the lake extends into the Vraka-Gril area. Visitors who want to combine a stay with nature watching and regional history will find a clear focus on the lake here.

Lake Shkodra: protected area and habitat

Lake Shkodra was added to the Ramsar List in 2005. Its Albanian zone is designated as a managed nature reserve. The ecosystem includes hundreds of plant and animal species. Its inclusion in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves also recognizes the lake’s exceptional ecological, landscape and sociocultural values.

In the Malësi e Madhe area, the section of Lake Shkodra from Vraka-Gril to Han i Hotit stretches for around 30 km. This gives the landscape a regional scale, while Grilë provides a specific connection to the lake.

Lake Shkodra is suitable for birdwatching and is considered a habitat for more than 200 bird species. Pygmy cormorants breed in the marshy north, while Dalmatian pelicans nest on floating peat islands at the lake’s northern end. Habitat conditions can change. Fishing is also possible on the lake.

Culture and history of the Vraka region

Grilë is one of the villages on Lake Shkodra where Albania’s Montenegrin minority lives. In the villages of the Vraka region around Grilë, the community has preserved its language, culture, religion and traditions. This gives the place a cultural context distinct from the lake’s natural environment and protected-area perspective.

Historical accounts place the remains of the Church of Saint Petka in Grilë and the Vraka area. The Church of St. Vračeva is also located in historic Vraka beside Lake Shkodra. The cathedral church of the Vrača community, the Church of the Holy Mother of God in Mladi Borič, was built in 1869.

A report from January 2022 noted that a traditional service in Montenegrin is held every year on January 7 at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Vrakë. If you are travelling specifically for this occasion, check the date for the relevant year and access arrangements.
