In the Lake Shkodër Biosphere Reserve, the landscape stretches from the Adriatic coast to mountain peaks over 2,000 meters high. Its mosaic includes wetlands, forests and agricultural land. Shkodra County therefore brings together very different themes to explore: protected areas and wildlife, museums and historic sites, mountain landscapes and coast.

Lake Shkodër: protected area and habitat

The biosphere reserve includes Lake Shkodër, the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Liqeni i Shkodres is designated a Managed Nature Reserve under IUCN Management Category IV. More than 280 bird species occur in the biosphere reserve, including the Dalmatian pelican; mammals found there also include the Balkan lynx. This diversity exists alongside an activity that remains important to everyday life in the region: fishing continues to support local livelihoods around the protected area.

For nature enthusiasts, this landscape offers several perspectives: the lake as a major freshwater body, its international protected status and the wildlife of the biosphere reserve.

Museums and images of Albania

In Shkodër, the city’s history can also be explored in two museums with very different collections. Since 1996, the Historical Museum of Shkodër has been housed in the restored monumental Oso Kuka House. Its exhibits include archaeological finds, traditional clothing, old weapons, handicrafts and everyday objects. The collection thus brings together archaeological evidence and insights into clothing, crafts and domestic life.

The National Marubi Museum of Photography opened in Shkodër on May 9, 2016, as Albania’s first institution of its kind. More than 500,000 negatives and photographs document Albanian life, historical events and landscapes over a period of more than a century. Visitors interested in history will find two different approaches here: objects and evidence of everyday life at the Historical Museum, and photographic images spanning a long documented period at the Marubi Museum.

Medieval traces and historic sites

History is a defining theme beyond the museum collections, too. Sarda was an important center during the rule of the Dukagjini family. The medieval ruins on Shurdhahu include defensive walls, church foundations and the remains of ancient buildings. These different architectural remains bring several layers of the site’s history to life, from older buildings to the fortifications and church structures of medieval Sarda.

Rozafa Castle dates back to Illyrian times and underwent further phases of construction later. The region therefore offers different ways to explore its history: the past documented over a long period in photographs at the Marubi Museum, archaeological and everyday-life artifacts at the Historical Museum, and architectural traces at places such as Sarda.

Mountain landscapes and trails

The towns and villages of the Albanian Alps offer a range of options for hiking and nature lovers. An official Alpine itinerary connects Theth, Shkodër, Vermosh, Razëm, Bogë and Valbonë. In Theth, a trail leads from the old mill area to Theth Canyon. Theth Church was built in 1892 and restored in 2005. Almost 90 percent of Theth National Park is covered by beech forests; the park is also known for its rich biodiversity.

Razëm combines a mountain setting with hiking opportunities and winter activities. Vermosh is associated with mountain hiking as well as nature and cultural tourism; alpine scenery, hospitality and local cuisine are also among its noted features. Fushë-Arrëz offers hiking, nature exploration and rural tourism near Qafë-Mali National Park. The mountain towns and villages each offer a different focus, rather than one single, uniform experience.

Coast and regional cuisine

Velipoja Beach adds a coastal dimension to the mountain and lake areas. The water is shallow and gradually deepens, making the beach suitable for families and children. Ferry trips on Lake Koman are known as some of the most impressive in Europe. The lake was formed in 1985 after the Koman Dam was built.

Cuisine offers another way to experience the region. Guesthouses in Fushë-Arrëz serve dishes made with local ingredients and prepared using traditional methods. These include laknure, pies, slow-cooked meat, mountain soups and fresh garden salads. When planning your trip, you can choose which interests to prioritize: protected areas and wildlife, museum collections and historic buildings, activities in the mountains, or the gently sloping beach at Velipoja.
