Vermosh is an Alpine village with extensive pastures, forests and rivers. A distinctive landform is Vermosh Canyon, also called the “Canyon of the Union.” It forms at the confluence of the Vermosh and Lepushe rivers and is a natural attraction in the Albanian Alps that is suitable for hiking. Planning can therefore focus on both a distinctive natural destination and several specifically described trails.
Hiking between the canyon and circular trails
The “Gropat e Selcë – Perdelecit Vermosh” hiking trail is 25,715.96 metres long; its stated duration is 5 hours and 30 minutes. This time is an estimate: actual hiking time varies depending on conditions and walking pace. The trail is in Shkodra District and the Albanian Alps National Park. Its stated length and duration make it a multi-hour planning focus; allow extra time for your own pace.
The “Trail of the Forest” (Shtegu i pyllit) is a loop from the centre of Vermosh to Skrapatush and back to the centre. Another circular route, the “Trail of Kërshi i Djegur” (Shtegu i Kërshit të Djegur), runs from Vermosh Bashkim via Qafa e Kujtë and Kërshi i Djegur, returning to Vermosh Bashkim. The route sequences provide specific guidance: one route starts at the centre, while the other starts in Vermosh Bashkim and passes through the named waypoints.
The “Red Water Trail” (Shtegu i ujit të kuq) is also described as a loop. From the centre of Vermosh, it runs via Varri i Memit, Qafa e Mojanit, Zabel and Lugu i ujit, then past Varri i Memit and Vermosh Velipoja, before returning to the centre. The “Canyon Trail” (Shtegu i kanionit) runs from Vermosh Bashkim via Ujëvara to Kanion. The named starting and ending points show how these routes differ.
Vermosh Canyon itself is accessible year-round. Seasonal conditions may still affect individual visits, so check conditions before setting out on a specific hike.
More activities and local connections
Besides hiking, Vermosh is suitable for mountain biking and camping. This means different activity focuses are possible during a stay. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the described hiking trails, mountain biking or camping.
Cultural activities are organised in Vermosh in summer to promote the heritage of Kelmendi. If you would like to combine culture and landscape, you can include this seasonal focus in your trip plans.
A description published in 2016 characterises Mishavinë as a distinctive cheese made from sheep’s and cow’s milk, and places its production mainly in Lepushë and Vermosh. This named product provides a culinary connection to both places. Together with the summer activities, it offers a different perspective on Vermosh from the trail descriptions and landscape.
Plan your journey to Vermosh
A route description published in 2016 goes from Shkodra via Koplik and Bajza. Instead of turning left to cross the border, the route described follows the SH20 towards Lepushë and Vermosh. This records the named places and road direction for orientation. As it does not describe current road conditions, it is advisable to check the latest road conditions before driving.
