Velipojë lies where the Buna flows into the Adriatic. Its beach stretches for about 14 kilometres and is up to 200 metres wide. The coastline gives the town a clear connection to the beach, while the river mouth and wetlands also shape its geographical setting. Beach and waterscape

Viluni Lagoon lies about 2 kilometres east of the beach. A channel about 500 metres long and 30 to 40 metres wide connects it to the sea. A complex of wetlands forms in the lower reaches of the Buna, including Viluni Lagoon and other interconnected wetlands. The island of Ada lies in the Buna’s natural delta.

Birdlife and nature

The Buna–Velipojë protected area is an important corridor for bird migration, as well as a wintering and breeding area for waterbirds. At the mouth of the Buna, a heron colony includes spoonbills, ibises, herons and pygmy cormorants. Viluni Lagoon has rich and varied wildlife, particularly a diverse bird population. Herons, flamingos and other migratory birds can be spotted in Velipojë. Which species can be seen varies seasonally; sightings also depend on the date and conditions.

Activities on the beach and along the Buna

Paddleboarding is possible at the beach. Cycling routes and off-road trails lead from Velipojë into the surrounding wetlands and pine forests. Route availability and trail conditions can change; check the current route and surface before setting out on a bike ride. The mouth of the Buna offers opportunities for fishing, although local rules may apply.

Many local and foreign visitors use the sand on the beach for therapeutic sunbathing, as known in traditional folk medicine. This practice is not a medical recommendation.

Archaeological traces and getting there

Conical burial mounds built of stone have been found at Malin e Luarzit. The ruins of a church stand on the banks of the Buna. These findings give Velipojë an archaeological point of interest alongside its coast and nature. From Shkodra, Velipojë can be reached via the SH27 through Bërdicë and Barbullush; the drive takes about 40 minutes. Check local road conditions before travelling.

The 2025 municipal monitoring report lists the tourist information office in Velipojë as open seasonally from May to October. If you plan to use the service, check the opening hours for your travel dates, as seasonal operations may change.
