On the Shishtavec Plateau, alpine pastures lie within the protected Korab–Koritnik area. The plateau ranges in elevation from about 900 to 2,130 meters. Mount Koritnik is also part of Korab–Koritnik Nature Park. In this landscape, Guri i Mëngjesit offers a different point of interest: this natural monument lies on the Shishtavec Plateau and serves as an important landmark for visitors.
Protected Landscapes and Water
Another distinctive natural monument is Këneta e Kashtës, a relict lake covering about 24 hectares and classified as Category III. The area is considered suitable for observing migratory birds and for sport fishing; conditions may vary seasonally. At Liqeni i Fierzës, water and mountain scenery come together in a different way: the lake was created on the Drin in 1978 as part of the hydroelectric system. It connects Kukës, Has, Tropojë, and Pukë; its calm waters lie against a mountainous backdrop.
Geological discoveries include Jezinë Cave, with stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground water source. Exploring it requires experience and the company of specialized guides. The waterfalls are easier to locate: Topojan Waterfall is 250 meters from the main road and is reached via a bridge over the river. Rragam Waterfall is near the village of Rragam, above Valbona.
Routes Between Mountains and Valleys
Access routes for hiking and mountaineering on Koritnik are listed from Zapod, Bele, Bardhoc, and Morin. Mali i Gjallicës offers a different point of reference: the mountain rises to 2,489 meters and is designated as a destination for mountaineering and mountain tourism. Traditional routes begin in Shtiqën, Nangë, Lojme, and Kukës; their difficulty levels vary. Hiking, nature exploration, mountaineering, and fishing are also among the activities available in Valbonë National Park. Cave visits, including to Shpella e Dragobisë, are another option. The Gashi River is considered suitable for nature exploration, hiking, and biodiversity studies. A route to Kanioni i Shkallës së Keqe passes through traditional Luma villages and by the Kroi i Kuq mountain spring, and is suitable for hiking and photography. Routes and seasonal access may involve changing conditions; check these before setting out. Pashtriku is also a tourist destination in Qark Kukës and part of the municipality of Has.
Dance, Museums, and Regional Cuisine
K’cimi i Tropojës is a festive dance performed throughout the year, especially at traditional celebrations. It is performed with the Tupan, Çifteli, and Fyell. These instruments are as much a part of the experience of this dance tradition as the occasions for performing it: it is seen not only at a single festival but throughout the year.
Muzeu Etnografik i Kukësit is centrally located and can be reached on foot or by vehicle. Its pavilions on biodiversity, archaeology, and ethnography explore the heritage of Luma, Malzi, and Gora; exhibitions may change. The Tropoja Historical Museum focuses on the region’s history, culture, and everyday life. Topics presented include traditional clothing, tools, household items, and crafts.
The cuisine of Kukës also offers distinctive regional discoveries, including various traditional pies and flija, made with wheat or corn dough, butter, and eggs. Locally produced raki is made from fruits and berries. Along with dance and museum traditions, the cuisine offers a cultural experience that differs distinctly from the natural attractions of the mountains, routes, and bodies of water.
