Kukës lies on the shore of Lake Fierza and at the foot of Mount Gjallica. Lake Fierza is considered the city’s main tourist attraction and offers impressive views. Together with a park forest, it surrounds Kukës on three sides. The city center is on the eastern side of the lakeshore, with a promenade running along the lake. The city’s elongated, peninsula-like shape also defines the character of Kukës. A stay here can therefore focus both on its distinctive waterside setting and on the city itself.

City history and cultural sites

New Kukës was built by the residents of Kukës in less than ten years. The first foundation stones were laid on July 22, 1962. The city plan called for a grid of right-angled streets dividing Kukës into residential blocks. This history gives the town a distinct historical dimension alongside the lakeside landscape.

The Ethnographic Museum of Kukës is located in the center. It can be reached on foot or by vehicle; visitor arrangements may change. Check the latest conditions before your visit. The museum is divided into three pavilions covering biodiversity, archaeology and ethnography. The ethnographic heritage of Kukës includes traditional clothing, songs, dances and musical instruments. The pavilions offer a range of thematic perspectives, while these cultural traditions provide a distinct picture of the region’s ethnographic heritage.

Another historical landmark lies beneath the city: the tunnel complex is about 30 meters below Kukës and was built between 1979 and 1992. The tunnels are considered a testament to Albania during the Cold War. The Kosovo Exodus Memorial commemorates more recent history. Former Kosovar refugees built it in 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of their return from exile. The memorial includes a structure resembling a fortified tower, or kulla, intended to symbolize Albanian hospitality and determination.

Lake, bridge and nearby destinations

The Great Bridge of Kukës offers views of the Black Drin and Lake Fierza and is a good spot for photography. The Shkalla e Keqe gorge can also be seen with the naked eye from the city center. It is a natural monument about 1,000 meters deep, with a narrowest point of 3 meters. Visibility and access conditions may vary.

The Beleve Waterfall is about 14 kilometers from Kukës. A path about 180 meters long leads to the waterfall from the main road. Road and trail conditions may change; check them before your excursion.

For a longer hike, consider the alpine Path of Colors in the wider region. It runs for about 18 kilometers between Shishtavec and the Korab Plateau; the hike usually takes 6 to 7 hours. If you prefer a shorter walk, you can reach Beleve Waterfall via the path of about 180 meters from the main road. Another hiking route in the area opened as part of a 2023 project and connects Bele Waterfall, Zbinec and Zbinec Pass. Here too, check trail conditions before setting out.

Cuisine and finding accommodation

Traditional cuisine in the Kukës region includes local pastries such as flija, as well as raki, honey and homemade dairy products. Fish from Lake Fierza is also among Kukës’s traditional dishes. The Green Path agritourism farm is 4 kilometers from Kukës and combines nature, aquaculture and traditional cuisine; individual offerings may change. For travel beyond the town, the road network connects Kukës with Tirana, Dibër, Tropojë, Mirditë, Shkodër and Kosovo. Routes and conditions may change, so check current connections before traveling.

If you are looking for hotels in Kukës, start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: city history, the museum and lakeshore, or destinations in the wider region. The options described range from cultural sites in the center to hikes of considerably different lengths. Plan according to the visits and excursions you actually want to include.
