In Durrës County, the Adriatic coast meets archaeological, cultural and historical discoveries. This contrast is especially vivid at Durrës Beach: the coastline stretches for around 10.5 kilometres along the coastal city. Shallow water and a gentle entry make it suitable for children too; swimming, other water activities, long walks along the shore and relaxing in the sun are among the possibilities at the beach.

Adriatic Coast and Outdoor Routes

Jet skiing, boat trips, parasailing and volleyball are also among the activities at Durrës Beach. Seasonal offerings and providers may change, and coastal conditions can vary. Restaurants and cafés in the beach area serve fresh fish and Mediterranean cuisine; individual establishments may change. Kallmi Beach adds to the coastal scene with beach tourism and relaxation in the sun and by the sea.

At Cape Rodon, nature and history stand side by side. The cape and its cliffs are classified as a Category III natural monument and are associated with nature tourism. Beaches, nature walks, hikes, seaside relaxation and panoramic photography offer different ways to experience the landscape. Those interested in historic fortifications can also explore Rodon Castle on Cape Rodon. It was built in the 15th century by order of Skanderbeg.

Archaeological Traces in Durrës

The Archaeological Park of Durrës is an important centre for history and archaeology. It is close to the sea and in the centre of the modern city. The park takes visitors back to Durrës’ origins: Greek colonists founded the city in the 7th century BC; in the later Roman period, it was known as Dyrrachium. The park includes the Amphitheatre of Durrës, the Arapaj Mosaic, Roman baths, and Byzantine and Venetian walls. There are also ruins of temples, basilicas and houses. Together, these sites offer a gateway to Illyrian, Greek and Roman heritage.

The Archaeological Museum of Durrës is Albania’s largest and most important archaeological institution and a cultural destination for local and international visitors. It is located near the waterfront promenade, the 6th-century Byzantine wall and the city’s main historical sites. Its collection comprises more than 3,000 artefacts reflecting the city’s life, cult and art across 2,000 years of history. Exhibits may change during restoration. The Great Mosque of Durrës adds another dimension to the city’s story, highlighting its Muslim heritage and layered history.

Krujë: Fortress, Museums and Local Crafts

The archaeological zones and historic core of Krujë are also part of the protected cultural heritage and are associated with historical and archaeological tourism. Krujë Castle was built in the 5th and 6th centuries and has nine defensive towers. Within the castle walls, the Skanderbeg Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. Visitors can see historical objects, illustrations and weapons, as well as materials about the resistance against the Ottoman Empire.

The Ethnographic Museum of Krujë is housed in the Toptani family home, built in 1764. The building preserves original Ottoman architectural elements. Around 1,000 authentic objects illustrate traditional life, customs, crafts and local handicrafts; the items on display may change. In Krujë’s Old Bazaar, craft shops sit alongside traditional Albanian dishes, local products and typical drinks. In this way, historical evidence, everyday culture and local crafts come together in different forms in Krujë.

Durrës County therefore offers more than a single focus for your discoveries: along the coast, swimming, water sports and outdoor routes shape the experience; in Durrës and Krujë, archaeological sites, museums and historic buildings lead to different chapters of history. Which aspect interests you most may shape how you experience the trip.
