In front of the Tropoja Historical Museum stands a statue of Bajram Curri. The city lies at the foot of Bjeshka e Bisheva and Poni, combining places of remembrance with a mountain landscape that also comes into play when planning excursions. You can focus on the museum and monuments, or include natural attractions in your trip; distances and routes vary.
Museum and Places of Remembrance
The Tropoja Historical Museum is located in the center of Bajram Curri. Its building combines traditional elements of a mountain farmhouse with contemporary details. The museum was built in 1985, covers 1,300 m² and is arranged into eight exhibition halls laid out in a spiral. The collection presents the history, culture and everyday life of Tropoja through traditional costumes, ethnographic objects, work equipment, household utensils and craft tools. It thus offers a glimpse of everyday life, from clothing and household items to work and crafts.
Places of remembrance can also be found beyond the museum: a statue of the freedom fighter stands in the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Bajram Curri. The city also has a bust of the hero Asim Vokshi and the bas-relief of the District Historical Museum. Together with the statue in front of the museum, these monuments offer different starting points for a tour of the city’s history.
Mountain Scenery and Natural Attractions
The Vrella e Shoshanit spring is 3 km from Bajram Curri, at the entrance to the Valbona Valley. It gives rise to the gorge of the same name, which is 2–3 m wide and 50 m deep and is considered a natural monument of the district. The Valbona Valley itself lies 23 km from the city, is a state-protected natural monument and has been declared a National Nature Park. The spring and gorge are natural attractions at the entrance to the valley; the more distant valley offers a different setting for activities in the protected area.
Hiking, nature exploration, mountaineering, fishing and cave visits are possible in Valbona National Park. Your choice of activity depends on your interests; access conditions may vary. The Cave of Dragobi is near the village of Dragobi, is associated with national hero Bajram Curri and offers an opportunity to explore nature and history together. Its location is tied to the village of Dragobi, so it should not automatically be planned as a destination in the immediate vicinity of the city.
Routes and Getting There
The route to the Gashi River usually starts in Bajram Curri and passes through the mountain villages of Dragobi, Qerem, Markovçë, Rorkuz and Dobërdol. From there, the route continues on foot through mountainous terrain to the natural area. The walking adventure section takes about 45 minutes; this approximate time applies to this section, not to the entire route through the villages. When planning, take the terrain and possible changes to access conditions into account.
The Bajram Curri–Valbona road connects the city with the Valbona Valley and is considered paved and relatively well maintained. Road conditions can change; check the current situation before setting out. Another connection is the Krumë–Qafë-Prush–Bajram Curri route: it runs along secondary roads from Kukës to Bajram Curri via mountain passes and connects Tropoja with the city. Regular bus and minibus services to Tirana, Kukës and other major cities are also available. Check schedules and operators locally before travelling.
Festival and Trip Planning
The “Sofra Dardane” festival has been held every year in Bajram Curri since 2003. It brings together artists and folk groups from all regions of Albania. Dates and programme details may vary; if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the current event dates. The respective routes, distances and conditions provide different considerations for planning.
