Exploring Tirana County reveals a remarkable range of experiences: museums in Tirana focus on the history of surveillance and political control, while Dajti National Park is known for its mountain landscapes, forests, and diverse flora and fauna. Tirana lies in central Albania near Mount Dajti and about 30 kilometres from the Adriatic coast. Discoveries thus lead from the city’s political history to natural and cultural destinations in its surroundings.

History in Different Settings

The House of Leaves is a museum about surveillance and control during Albania’s communist regime. It preserves original surveillance infrastructure and equipment from the former State Security headquarters. BUNK'ART 1, near the Linza area, explores Albania’s political and military history from 1939 to the end of communism. Visitors can explore corridors, command rooms, and installations about the period of isolation there.

BUNK'ART 2 takes a different approach: the museum covers the communist dictatorship, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, surveillance, and state control. In an underground bunker, visitors can see documents, authentic objects, State Security equipment, and multimedia installations. Together, the museums offer different ways to engage with recent history, without telling the same stories in the same way.

Tirana’s longer history also provides context: it stretches from early Illyrian and Roman times through the Middle Ages to its designation as Albania’s capital in 1920. Tirana Castle is now a cultural and tourism area with traditional pubs, craft shops, and exhibition spaces. Historical context and contemporary cultural use come together here.

Markets, Cuisine, and City Life

Near the historic centre is the New Bazaar, whose covered market features fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, and traditional Albanian specialities. It also serves as a landmark for travellers. Tirana’s culinary scene can also be explored at traditional restaurants: their menus feature dishes such as Tirana stew, Tava e Kosit, and Jufka with chicken; Baklava and Kadaifi are among the sweets mentioned. The market and the dishes offer two different glimpses of regional food culture—one through ingredients and specialities, the other through prepared meals.

Mountain Landscapes and Outdoor Activities

Mountain landscapes and dense forests define Dajti National Park, while its diverse flora and fauna add to the natural scenery. Activities on offer include hiking, mountain biking, camping, and picnicking. A ride on the Dajti cable car passes over forests and valleys and offers views of Tirana and the surrounding region. These are different ways to experience the landscape, from active pursuits to taking in the view from the cable car.

Other natural attractions have their own distinctive features. Pëllumbas Cave is designated a natural monument for its geological, speleological, and historical value. Inside are rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites; the surrounding area is suitable for hiking and exploring nature. Activities at Shëngjergji Waterfall include hiking, nature walks, photography, relaxing, and picnicking. The landscape near Shëngjergj lies on the Erzen River and is surrounded by Mali me Gropa—a green, mountainous setting for spending time outdoors.

Destinations with Their Own Character

Petrelë sits on a hill above the Erzen River and offers views of the Dajti Mountains and the Tirana plain. Petrelë Castle is a historically significant monument dating from the Byzantine period. Petrelë is considered easily accessible by road and well suited to day trips and cultural stays. Restaurants and guesthouses serve traditional Albanian cuisine made with natural products and regional recipes. River activities are also available during hot periods, making them a seasonal option.

At Lake Bovilla, the main activities are mountaineering, climbing, and mountain biking. The road from Tirana to Zall-Herr is paved; after that, a rural section continues along the route to the lake and is passable by small cars. As road conditions can change, it is worth checking them before setting off. The natural destinations therefore differ not only in their landscapes, but also in the activities mentioned and the routes to reach them.
