East Bernard combines its location on the San Bernard River with a local history that can be traced through its depot, church, and community life. The city lies on the river’s west bank, at the intersection of State Highway 60 and U.S. Highway 90A. East Bernard is 15 miles north of Wharton, in northeastern Wharton County. Its defining themes include both its immigration history and Czech-American community life.

Local History on the San Bernard River

An early chapter began with the Bernard Station depot: by 1869, it had been moved to the west side of the river, to the site where East Bernard’s Main Street would later be. After the 1880s, a large influx of German and Slavic immigrants began. These two developments provide a timeline for the local history, from the early relocation of the depot to later changes in the population.

Church and Czech-American Community Life

The present building of Holy Cross Catholic Church was built in 1925 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Its architectural details include ten large roundel-design stained-glass windows and imported Czechoslovakian decorations. Pioneer Chapel, built in 1994, is a model of the original Holy Cross Church. The two structures thus relate to different chapters in the church’s history: the present church building and a model of the original church.

Community life is also part of this cultural story. Men from the Holy Cross Catholic community in East Bernard founded the local chapter of the K.J.T. St. Wenceslaus Society No. 40 in 1905. The K.J.T. lodge hall became the parish’s social center. Events held there included bazaars, society conventions, Sokol athletic meets, weddings, and dances. These types of events illustrate the breadth of community life, which extended beyond religious gatherings.

Family History and Festival Tradition

Chesterville Cemetery has been designated a Historic Texas Cemetery since 2001. Its historical significance also lies in its documentation of the families who settled and developed the former prairie landscape. It thus complements the church and community history with a perspective on the families who shaped the landscape.

The annual Czech Kolache-Klobase Festival is another part of local culture. The 35th edition took place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas. The 2026 program included arts and crafts featuring handmade goods, ethnic gifts and souvenirs, as well as Bohemian crystal; offerings may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date of the edition for your chosen year, as dates change.

More Things to Do During Your Stay

East Bernard City Pool has a wading pool and a swimming pool used for both recreation and training. Alongside local and cultural history, recreation and exercise are another distinct focus. Holy Cross Catholic Church offers weekday Masses and four weekend Masses. If you plan to attend a service, check the current schedule, as it may change.
