Get to know The Colony through a variety of activities: trails through unspoiled nature, parks on Lewisville Lake and recreational options ranging from disc golf to events. For planning, it helps to distinguish trails by length and surface, and parks by their amenities. Seasonal attractions and event dates may also affect your timing.

Nature trails and varied routes

The Colony Shoreline Trail offers 3.5 miles of an environmentally designed hiking and biking trail through unspoiled nature. It begins at Stewart Creek Park and ends at Ridgepointe Park. The Tribute Shoreline Nature Trail also passes through unspoiled nature for 2.5 miles; at the tip of the peninsula, it includes an overlook of Lewisville Lake. The Hidden Cove Nature Trail runs for 2.28 miles along Lewisville Lake through the southern part of the 720-acre Hidden Cove Park.

Of these three routes, the Colony Shoreline Trail is the longest and the Hidden Cove Nature Trail the shortest; the Tribute Trail falls in between and adds an overlook to its listed features. This makes it possible to choose based on specific characteristics without treating the trails as interchangeable. On the Tribute Shoreline Nature Trail, the view from the overlook is part of the route’s described character; the Colony Shoreline Trail’s starting and ending points are specified.

Concrete trails are also available: the Park Loop Trail has 3.5 miles of concrete surface. The Austin Ranch Trail is a 3.3-mile concrete trail through The Colony’s Austin Ranch area. Both therefore have the same stated surface; the Park Loop Trail is 0.2 miles longer. These details help compare the routes but do not, on their own, indicate how long it takes to walk them.

Parks on Lewisville Lake

Stewart Creek Park on Lewisville Lake offers camping, boat ramps, a swimming beach, a fishing pier and lakeside recreation. Hidden Cove Park adds tent sites, covered tent cabins, cabins, bunkhouses and RV sites with full hookups. This gives visitors a choice of camping options alongside water activities; the listed facilities belong to their respective parks.

Hidden Cove Park charges an admission fee. Day and annual permits are available on site. Check current fees and access conditions before your visit so you can factor this information into your plans.

Sports and water activities

The Wheel Zone Bike & Skate Park features ramps, platforms, rails and benches for biking, skateboarding and inline skating. Pawsome Playground, meanwhile, is divided into separate areas for small and large dogs: the small-dog area covers 0.85 acres, and the large-dog area covers 2.1 acres.

The Parks and Recreation Department of The Colony hosts two disc golf tournaments each year, one in January and one in August. The tournaments are open to all skill levels. Since dates and details may vary, check the specific event dates before your trip.

The Colony Aquatic Park has four pools, including the Splash Zone for younger guests. During the winter and spring months, a heated indoor pool is also available there; kayak programs are also offered. Hawaiian Waters is a seasonal water attraction featuring the Breaker Bay wave pool, the Kona Cooler lazy river and The Torpedo water slide. Check current operating information before visiting Hawaiian Waters or the Grandscape Wheel.

History and events

The historic sites also offer distinct points of interest. Bridges Cemetery received an official historical marker from the Texas Historical Commission in 2018. An interpretive sign in Historical Park describes where the present-day community first began to develop. A historic Denton County bridge has been installed in Greenway Park. Together, these sites offer different points of connection to local history: a marker, an interpretive sign and a historic bridge.

For events, Grandscape Stage & Lawn is equipped for concerts, movies and fashion shows. The Grandscape Wheel is 180 feet tall and has climate-controlled gondolas. Truck Yard offers live music by local artists and oversized yard games. Since event schedules can change, check in advance which dates are planned for your stay.
