History in Goose Creek

Two early dates in Goose Creek are close together: St. James Goose Creek Cemetery is dated to around 1711; construction of the existing brick St. James Goose Creek Church began around 1713. These dates refer to different historical things: the cemetery and the construction of the church. The cemetery is therefore dated approximately two years earlier than the start of church construction; both dates remain approximate.

A later memorial is the Huguenot Church Marker in Goose Creek. The Huguenot Society of South Carolina erected it in 1910. It commemorates the French Huguenot settlement and church in Goose Creek. Unlike the cemetery date and the start of church construction, the focus here is on remembering the earlier settlement.

The existing brick church features 18th-century pews, a curved pulpit, a lectern, and a plaster reredos painted in the Baroque style. The date of the pews provides a chronological reference point; the pulpit, lectern, and reredos are other specific furnishings. This means the church can be placed in context using more than just its approximate construction start date.

Oaks Plantation in Goose Creek was established in 1678–1680 by Edward and Arthur Middleton. Around 1900, the Oaks Plantation house was replaced by a half-timbered house with columns. The two dates describe different phases: the plantation's establishment in the late 17th century and the much later replacement of the house around 1900. The earlier date is therefore not the construction date of the later house.

Markets and Event Spaces

The Coastal Carolina Flea Market has more than 1,000 covered and uncovered vendor stalls; the number may change. Products include local honey, fresh fruit, vegetables, jams, and baked goods. Individual vendors' offerings may vary. Honey, fruit, and vegetables are offered alongside jams and baked goods—the market features several different product groups.

Exchange Hall includes the Blue Room and the Gold Room, which can be used for smaller events. This gives event planners two named rooms and a specific type of use. If you are considering a room for an event, confirm the details of its intended use in advance.

The event date may determine your travel dates; the historical topics in Goose Creek and the different market and event details offer further points to consider when deciding which interests to include in your travel plans.
