Folly Beach combines wide beaches and surf spots with nature watching, walks and connections to cultural history. To help you choose, it’s useful to first decide what you’re looking for: waves and beach, scenic viewpoints and birdlife, or history. The options differ not only in subject, but also in where and when they’re relevant.

Beaches, Surf and Nature

Visitors to Folly Beach have access to wide beaches stretching for six miles. The destination is also known for consistent waves for surfing. The Washout is a surf spot where people surf particularly good waves year-round. This means Folly Beach’s general reputation for surfing and one specific spot go hand in hand—a useful distinction if you want to focus your stay on the surf.

Nature attractions are also tied to specific locations. Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve is at the northeastern tip of Folly Island and offers views of Morris Island Lighthouse. Bird Key, an important nesting site for coastal birds, is visible from the western end of Folly Beach County Park. So you can choose between views of a lighthouse and an important coastal bird nesting site as different ways to experience nature.

Pier and Other Activities on the Water

The Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier extends more than 1,049 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors use Folly Beach Pier for birdwatching and walks, while enjoying wide-ranging views of Folly Beach. The Washout, by contrast, is a surf spot.

Visitors can fish at the end of the community dock in Folly River Park. This offers another water activity alongside surfing and walks. If you’re choosing activities by what you’d like to do, you can distinguish between waves, the pier and fishing from the dock.

Beach Access, Lifeguards and Parking

Folly Beach County Park provides access to the beach. Charleston County Parks and Recreation provides lifeguards from May through Labor Day at West End County Park and along the beach between 2nd Street East and 3rd Street West. If the presence of lifeguards affects your plans, these locations and dates are relevant. There’s a clear difference when choosing when to visit: people surf at The Washout year-round, while lifeguards are provided at the locations mentioned from May through Labor Day.

Information published on April 4, 2026, lists 225 parking spaces at Folly Beach County Park. Capacity and operating conditions can change; check the current situation before your visit.

Cultural History on Folly Beach

George Gershwin composed the classical opera Porgy and Bess during his stay on Folly Beach Island. This historical connection focuses on a particular person and a specific work, while the Historical Society’s collection offers another way to explore local history.

Part of the Folly Beach Historical Society’s collection is on display in the museum at the Community Center on Center Street. Exhibition details can change; check what’s currently on view before visiting.
