Atlantic beaches, marshland and creeks define Isle of Palms. The barrier island combines beach activities with insights into its history and coastal nature. When planning, it’s worth taking a closer look at the differences between Front Beach, the County Park and the activities on the water—as well as seasonal hours and local beach rules.

Front Beach and the Coast

Front Beach is Isle of Palms’ commercial district along Ocean Boulevard, between 10th Avenue and 14th Avenue. It has public restrooms, ample parking, restaurants and shops. The beaches stretch for seven miles and are suitable for swimming, relaxing, fishing, cycling and kayaking. This makes it possible to enjoy beach time and a visit to the commercial district as distinct parts of an island visit.

Isle of Palms County Park has a designated swimming area with access via boardwalks and accessible ramps. Seasonal lifeguards are on duty there. The park also offers beach rentals, a playground, sand volleyball courts, picnic areas and grills. A playground on Isle of Palms is designed for children from preschool age through 12 and meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Beach Access and Rules

The sand dunes are protected; use designated beach access points. Motorized vehicles, including golf carts, are prohibited on the beach. Leash and voice-control rules apply to dogs. Dogs may be off leash from April 1 through September 14 between 5 and 9 a.m., and from September 15 through March 31 between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Check the current municipal beach rules before your visit.

The city provides beach wheelchairs free of charge every day on a first-come, first-served basis. They are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 30 J.C. Long Boulevard, Isle of Palms, SC 29451. If you plan to use this option, check the current hours and procedures before your trip.

By Bike and on the Water

Most roads on the island have marked bike lanes; bicycles and golf carts are available to rent. This is a different way to explore the island than taking a trip on the water. Boating options include kayaks, canoes, sailboats and fishing boats, as well as luxury harbor cruises. Personal watercraft such as Jet Skis can also be rented to explore nearby islands.

Isle of Palms Marina is a full-service marina with 50 slips and a double-wide public boat ramp. Access to Breach Inlet Boat Landing is available from January through December; access must be renewed each year. Check current city requirements and fees in advance.

Coastal Nature and Island History

Large loggerhead sea turtles come ashore on Isle of Palms to lay their eggs. The Island Turtle Team monitors nesting sites, protects eggs, collects data on sea turtle activity, helps hatchlings reach the ocean and informs the public about their protection. Osprey nests and pelicans can also be observed on the island.

The island was first called Hunting Island and then Long Island until 1898. For many years, it served as a refuge and retreat; during the American Revolution, it was also a staging area for troops. The name Breach Inlet dates back to an event in 1776: British troops under Sir Henry Clinton landed on Long Island and attempted to cross the inlet toward Sullivan’s Island.

Market and Events

The IOP Farmers Market & Food Truck Jam features fresh produce, food vendors and live music. For 2026, dates are scheduled from June through October on the third Thursday of each month from 4 to 7 p.m. at 24 28th Avenue. Check the current seasonal calendar before visiting. Front Beach Fest features arts and crafts booths, activities for children, and local restaurants and food vendors; its lineup may vary from year to year.
