Chenango County’s landscape includes four rivers, extensive forests and gently rolling terrain. Trails, river activities, museums, historic sites and farmers’ markets offer a variety of themes for a stay.

Forest Trails, Rivers and Nature Experiences

Trails for hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling run through 80,000 acres of state land. The Brookfield Trail System offers 130 miles for horseback riding and snowmobiling; hiking and cross-country skiing are also possible there. The Whaupaunaucau State Forest in North Norwich offers opportunities for hiking and cross-country skiing across nearly 1,200 acres of state land. Hiking and cross-country skiing are available at both destinations; horseback riding and snowmobiling are additional options at the Brookfield Trail System.

A one-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail runs through Ludlow Creek State Forest. This specific trail length adds another scale to the acreage figures for the state lands.

General Clinton Park provides river access for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. A nature center offers guided tours where visitors can see timber wolves, eastern coyotes and arctic foxes. The options range from river activities to guided nature experiences featuring different groups of animals.

Vehicle Collection and Historic Sites

The Northeast Classic Car Museum displays more than 170 classic and historic vehicles, as well as 28 motorcycles. The collection is housed in five interconnected, climate-controlled buildings. For vehicle enthusiasts, the museum combines a large collection with a clearly defined layout.

The Earlville Opera House is an upstairs theater built in 1892 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The two dates mark different milestones: the theater’s construction and its later addition to the register.

In Norwich, the Court House District encompasses 47 buildings; brochures are available for a walking tour. Here, the focus is not on a single theater but on a district with many buildings. Theater history in Earlville and the walking tour in Norwich offer different ways to discover historic sites.

Farmers’ Markets and a September Event

Chenango County has five farmers’ markets featuring local vegetables, lamb and pork, berries, herbs, flowers, maple syrup, cheese, baked goods and arts and crafts. Along with fresh produce and meat, the selection also includes baked goods and handmade items.

Another event for culture enthusiasts is the annual CCHS Antiques Show. It takes place on the first Sunday in September at the Chenango County Fairgrounds and features about 60 or more exhibitors. If you plan to attend the show, check the event dates before your visit.
