Oxford brings together local history and nature, complemented by music and locally made maple syrup.
Historic Homes and Local History
The Oxford Village Historic District includes 201 buildings and seven contributing structures. In the Village of Oxford, walking tours of historic homes showcase the Greek Revival, Gothic, and Queen Anne architectural styles. This lets you explore the architecture through both individual styles and the larger historic district. Built in 1837, the Chenango Canal ran through the center of the Village of Oxford.
Another link to the area's history is the former home of renowned bridge builder Theodore Burr. Today, the building is the Oxford Memorial Library and the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center. Its current use as a library and resource center sits alongside its former use as a residence.
Forest, Trail, and Camping
Wiley Brook State Forest is located in the Towns of Oxford and Guilford in Chenango County and covers 1,240 acres. A one-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail runs through the southwestern part of the forest. An 11-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail also runs through Oxford.
The two distances refer to different sections: one mile for the part in the southwestern Wiley Brook State Forest, and 11 miles for the section through Oxford. This distinguishes the broader reference to the area from the specific location within the forest, without treating both distances as equivalent hiking itineraries.
On the east shore of Wiley Pond, Wiley Brook State Forest has a primitive campsite available on a first-come, first-served basis. State campground rules and availability may change; check both before making plans.
Bowman Lake State Park is just outside Oxford. Its features include a 35-acre spring-fed lake, picnic facilities, paddle boat rentals, and nature trails. The park adds further landscape and recreation options to the forest and trail themes.
