Mine Kill Falls is an 80-foot, terraced waterfall. A scenic trail leads from the parking area down to its base. The Long Path offers a different experience: it reaches Schoharie County near the Blenheim-Gilboa Visitor’s Center and continues through Eminence State Forest, past Looking Glass Pond and on to Vroman’s Nose. Check trail conditions before hiking.
Waterfalls, Trails and Vistas
Vroman’s Nose overlooks the Schoharie Valley. At its summit is a flat rock surface known as the “dance floor.” Together, the trails described here lead to a variety of landscape features: the base of a waterfall, forest and pond along the Long Path, and the summit of Vroman’s Nose.
Wildlife enthusiasts can follow the Schoharie County Eagle Trail, an accessible bird-watching route through central Schoharie County. It focuses on the county’s eagle population. At Landis Arboretum, possible activities include hiking, walking, cross-country skiing and cycling; check current accessibility before your visit.
History in Buildings and Collections
The Old Stone Fort Museum Complex brings three centuries of rural life in New York State to life across eight historic and exhibition buildings on 25 acres. The Old Stone Fort itself was built in 1772 as a Reformed Church for the High Dutch, a German community. During the American Revolution, the building was fortified in 1777; it was attacked on October 17, 1780.
The 1743 Palatine House is presented as a living history museum. The Schoharie Valley Railroad Museum focuses on railroad buildings and vehicles. These include an original 1875 train station, six other original railroad buildings, a restored 1891 passenger car and a wooden 1917 caboose. The buildings and rolling stock offer two distinct perspectives on railroad history.
The Iroquois Museum combines archaeological exhibits about the ancestors of the Iroquois with historical topics. These include hunting, warfare, chiefdoms, games and life in a longhouse, as well as clans, crops and politics. The museum also features a comprehensive collection of modern Iroquois art. Its exhibits therefore span archaeological and historical perspectives as well as modern art.
Another focus is the history of the Earth. The Gilboa Museum displays an extraordinary collection of Devonian fossils, including some of the oldest known plant fossils on Earth. The Cave House Museum of Mining & Geology is an interactive museum about the past, present and future of geological resources. Both institutions explore geological subjects, but with different focuses: fossils and Earth history at one, and geological resources at the other.
The Schoharie County Quilt Barn Trail takes drivers through the county to large quilt blocks featuring meaningful patterns and historical content. The drive thus connects cultural motifs with the historical themes depicted on the blocks.
