The historic Pony Express Trail was established in 1860 as an overland mail route and ran along the Platte River through Dawson County. A Pony Express station at Midway Ranch in the county was added to the National Register in 1969. This offers two perspectives on Pony Express history: the route along the river and a single station. The museums then bring different collections, buildings, and subjects to the fore—from the development of individual communities to pioneer and railroad history.

Museums and Local History

The 100th Meridian Museum preserves a collection of artifacts dating from the founding of Cozad to the present. In Gothenburg, the Gothenburg Historical Museum takes a different approach to history: Housed in a former church, it has artifacts from the settlement of Gothenburg in 1885. Also in Gothenburg, the Sod House Museum focuses on early pioneer life. Period buildings, a reconstructed sod house, photographs, and memorabilia offer a glimpse of that era. Check current access before your visit.

The Dawson County Historical Museum in Lexington features exhibits on the county’s prehistory, settlement, railroad history, early pioneers, and notable people and events. The museum also includes a one-room schoolhouse built in 1888 and the relocated Willow Island Depot. Its exhibits thus combine a broad range of subjects with two specific historic buildings: the one-room schoolhouse and the depot.

Vehicles, Collections, and Memorial Sites

The Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles has a different focus. It houses around 100 authentic vehicles from all branches of the military and displays military weapons, uniforms, engines, and equipment. The collection is interactive: visitors can view, touch, and, in some cases, enter the exhibits. These military vehicles and objects complement the local histories, historic buildings, and settlement themes featured at the other museums.

Other cultural themes also shape Dawson County. The Barn Quilts of Dawson County Trail celebrates the region’s agricultural, quilt-related, and diverse ethnic heritage. A small cemetery in the county features three wrought-iron crosses representing the Swedish pioneer settlement. A short tour offered by the Robert Henri Museum led to three relocated sites in Cozad: Little Church by the Park, Country School District No. 86, and Pony Express Trading Post. Confirm before your visit whether the tour is still offered.

The one-mile trail has a paved concrete surface and is considered accessible; it also includes a wildlife-viewing area. Alongside the historic collections, the area offers a lake and a trail with specific details.
