Gothenburg can be explored through its unusual Pony Express heritage, an arboretum, and recreational opportunities at Lake Helen. When planning, it is worth noting the differences: some places tell the story of the city, while others combine architecture with a route to the lake or offer activities on and around the water. This way, you can choose the themes that suit your stay.

Historic Sites in Gothenburg

The Sam Machette Pony Express Station is located in Ehmen Park, also known as the Gothenburg Arboretum. The original log cabin was moved to this location and rebuilt there in 1931. The park itself also has a special character: it was designated an arboretum in 2014 and is home to more than 110 trees representing 62 different species and varieties. Here, the history of the Pony Express era meets a diverse tree collection.

Another historic site is the Swedish Crosses Cemetery, two miles north of Gothenburg and two miles west on Road 769. The cemetery has three grave markers made of Swedish steel; it was designated a Nebraska Historical Site in 1991. The Midway Pony Express Station south of Gothenburg offers a different visiting experience: it is on private property and is not generally open to the public. Tours of the site have been available to special-interest groups and tour buses, so do not plan on it as a freely accessible stop.

The Gothenburg Historical Museum displays photographs, documents, and artifacts that tell the story of the city’s past. Together with the station and cemetery, it offers another way to explore local history: through collections rather than a single building or historic site.

Architecture, Park, and Lake Helen

The Historic Tour of Gothenburg passes through tree-lined streets with older homes and buildings featuring Scandinavian-influenced architecture. The tour runs north from downtown to Lake Helen, connecting views of the built environment with a destination by the water.

The Lake Helen Recreation Area on the northern edge of Gothenburg offers opportunities for fishing and picnicking. The lake covers just under 20 acres; kayaking and canoeing are also possible there. A paved walking and biking trail runs around Lake Helen and through the park. The options are clearly varied: spend time by the water fishing or picnicking, go kayaking or canoeing, or continue along the trail on foot or by bike.

Theater and Local Events

The Sun Theatre was originally built as an opera house in 1909 and hosted live performances until 1926. Today, it shows current films almost every weekend. Its program also includes theatrical productions, concerts, talent contests, and special events. Check the screening and event schedule before your trip if you would like to plan a visit around it.

The Sun Theatre’s restrooms and auditorium have been made more accessible in accordance with ADA standards; additional seating was also added for visitors who use wheelchairs and their family members. If these improvements are important to your plans, confirm current access arrangements before your visit.

The city’s events also follow a seasonal rhythm. Gothenburg’s Farmer’s Market takes place annually from the last Thursday in July through the last Thursday in September. Fresh produce and freshly baked goods from local growers and bakers are sold there. The Annual Harvest Festival falls on the third weekend of September and features food and arts and crafts in Ehmen Park. Check the specific event dates and market hours before your trip.

If you are planning around a market or festival, check its dates; for a theater visit, take a look at the program.
