Prehistoric rock carvings, historic buildings, and the Missouri River give Richardson County distinctive ways to explore. Here, you can experience nature, local history, and a variety of recreational activities—from hiking and biking trails to museums and art.
River Landscapes and Traces of the Past
Indian Cave State Park borders the Missouri River and offers views of the broad, winding river and a stately hardwood forest. The trail network includes 22 miles for hiking and biking, plus 16 miles of horseback riding trails. The separate distances make it clear which activities are available: hiking and biking share a trail network, while horseback riding has its own designated route.
The rock carvings at Indian Cave also tell stories of earlier times. The prehistoric Native American rock carvings can be viewed from an ADA-accessible boardwalk. Living-history weekends in summer and fall offer another way to experience the past: traditional crafts are demonstrated in the restored schoolhouse and general store of the former river town of St. Deroin. Archaeological traces and demonstrations of traditional crafts thus offer different ways to connect with the past.
Historic Miles Ranch dates to around 1855 and preserves more than 160 years of American history and culture. It was one of the first large ranches west of the Missouri River and is home to Nebraska’s oldest barn. Its founding period, ranch history, and barn offer several specific historical points of reference, without any single event needing to take center stage.
Architecture and Collections in Falls City
Falls City’s commercial historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Individual buildings showcase distinct architectural styles: Gehling Opera House and Theater is a brick building with brick arches, stone cornices, turrets, and an elaborate cornice. The three-story Prichard Auditorium makes a different statement with its stone façade and Art Deco style. It was built in 1939–1940 as part of a WPA project.
The museums offer further perspectives on the region. The Richardson County Historical Museum displays artifacts that preserve the county’s history. The John Philip Falter Museum owns 129 cover illustrations Falter created for The Saturday Evening Post. The Richardson County Military History Museum focuses on memorabilia from World War I and World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. The three collections each emphasize a different subject: county history, illustrations, and military memorabilia.
The Stalder Art Gallery adds art to this story of museums and architecture. It offers museum-quality exhibitions, lectures, and visitor programs, and presents a variety of artworks throughout the year. The specific exhibitions on view may change.
Nature and Recreation at Your Own Pace
The Itha-Krumme Memorial Arboretum brings together a botanical collection across 2.2 acres. It showcases about 70 native plant species from Nebraska and neighboring states. The grounds include a paved path and six benches. The approximate species count and the plants’ origins help explain what makes this place distinctive.
Stanton Lake Park offers a range of activities: fishing at the lake, picnic areas, disc golf, a dog park, a walking path, and a playground. Classic Club 8 offers another distinct recreational option, with nine greens and 18 tee boxes.
For Kinter's Ford WMA on the Big Nemaha River, a 2009 Nebraska fishing guide lists carp and channel and flathead catfish. A 2009 description states that Margrave WMA offers foot access to the Big Nemaha River: the river is a half-mile walk away, and channel catfish and carp are listed. Check these older fishing details again before your trip.
Tastings are also among the region’s offerings: Whiskey Run Creek Winery & Distillery offers wine and spirits for tasting in a restored 100-year-old barn in Richardson County. Check current visitor arrangements before you go.
