The Little River Conservation Area brings together a lake, floodplain forest, marshland, and higher-elevation habitat. The 150-acre Jerry Paul Combs Lake, 103 acres of reforested hardwood floodplain, 360 acres of marshland, and 250 acres of higher-elevation habitat with scattered food plots form a mosaic of diverse habitats. Every year, Forster’s terns and black terns can be observed foraging on Combs Lake, offering a special glimpse of the region’s wildlife.

Pemiscot County lies along the Mississippi River in the Missouri Bootheel. Reynolds Park is also on the river. Interstate 55 provides access to the county and runs through it from north to south, offering a general guide for driving through the region.

Riverfronts and Conservation Areas

The conservation areas vary in landscape and river frontage. Gayoso Bend Conservation Area encompasses 968 acres of forestland and has two miles of Mississippi River frontage. John L. and Georgia Girvin Conservation Area has about three miles of river frontage and consists mostly of flat floodplain forest along the river. Rare species such as the Mississippi kite, interior least tern, primrose-willow, and cotton mouse have been recorded in the surrounding area. These species observations refer to the area around the site.

To reach Triangle Boat Club Access, drive north on Route N for about 0.50 miles from the intersection of Highway 84 and Route N east of Hayti. Then travel northwest on County Road 337 for about 0.50 miles, followed by an eastbound drive along the levee access road. John L. and Georgia Girvin Conservation Area can be reached by boat from the Mississippi River and via private farm gravel roads by ATV; the ATV route runs about 2.50 miles southeast.

A special use restriction applies at Gayoso Bend Conservation Area: public use is limited to fishing from a boat and waterfowl hunting from a boat when the Caruthersville river gauge reads at least 28 feet. Check the water level before your trip so you can take this condition into account when planning.

Caruthersville and Mississippi River History

Caruthersville is home to the “Lighthouse” water tower, a symbol of the city’s civic development and history. The Caruthersville Water Tower is listed on the National Register and is located on W. Third St. Both aspects make the tower a prominent historical landmark in the city.

The Pemiscot County Historical Society is housed in the Caruthersville Public Library building and is open to the public by appointment. Its digitized collection includes newspapers, school records, yearbooks, photographs, and historical documents. An appointment is therefore important before visiting; the collection offers different types of material for exploring regional history in greater depth.

Another chapter in the region’s history is Gayoso, the county’s former seat of government. The shifting Mississippi River swallowed the town around 1900. Remains of the former town, buried deep in the mud, lie in or near the Gayoso Bend unit of Black Island Conservation Area. The history of Hayti Negro School also extends beyond the boundaries of a single town: it drew students from Pemiscot, New Madrid, and Dunklin counties.

If you plan to visit, check the dates before your trip; its seasonal opening does not specify particular visiting days.
