Prairie and Bison Experiences

Prairie State Park is Missouri’s largest remaining tallgrass prairie landscape. More than 25 rare and endangered plant and animal species have been documented there. The landscape and its biodiversity offer two concrete perspectives on this area: its distinctive character as a remaining tallgrass prairie and the rare species documented there.

The Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center explores the tallgrass prairie through a seasonal diorama, a bison exhibit, and interactive activities. These offer different ways to engage: the diorama provides a vivid depiction, while the exhibit and hands-on activities explore other aspects of the subject. Those who enjoy exploring nature through specific displays will find a different focus here than out on a hike.

Prairie State Park has a backpacking campground where visitors can spend the night beneath the wide-open prairie sky. Guided bison hikes are also offered monthly, except in October. Check the schedule before your trip if you’re planning to join one. The park’s options are distinct: a guided tour offered on scheduled dates or an overnight stay at the backpacking campground.

Lamar: Parks, Market, and Events

Lamar has several specific places to visit. Lamar City Lake covers 250 acres. Wheeler Park has a children’s fishing pond. Wyatt Earp Park on Lamar Square features statues of Wyatt Earp and his wife, Urilla (Sutherland) Earp, as well as a bandstand. These places offer different experiences, from the lake and fishing to the statues and bandstand.

Local events and markets also give your visit its own rhythm. Picnic in the Park is a recurring food truck event at Lamar City Park; its schedule may change seasonally. The Tenth Street Community Farmers Market is a producer-only market. The products offered are grown locally or made within about 50 miles of the Lamar Moore Pavilion. Check market dates and participating vendors seasonally.

The Lamar Free Fair takes place every August in downtown Lamar. Its program includes fair activities, a youth livestock show, art exhibits, parades, and fair food. Since the program and dates vary by event, it’s a good idea to check the information for the year of your trip. The official event page for 2026 lists Golden Harvest Days Tractor-Rama as an annual event featuring lawn tractor contests and mini-rod pull competitions. Markets, recurring food truck events, and larger events therefore differ not only in format but also in their timing.

Local History and Historic Sites

The Golden City Museum preserves the town’s history through artifacts, documents, photographs, and works of art. The Barton County Historical Society also maintains a museum in the basement of the historic Barton County Courthouse. Upon request, the society provides information from its archives free of charge. If you’re particularly interested in the county’s history, this archive service, available upon request, offers another way to explore the subject.

Transportation history also has a specific connection to Lamar: over the years, the historic Jefferson Highway followed three different routes north through the town. It is therefore a historical sequence of different routes. The Plaza Theater opened on October 25, 1934, and reopened on November 5, 1998, after five years of community-supported restoration work. The Barco Starvu Drive-In opened on April 28, 1950. If you’re planning a visit, check before you go to see whether screenings are currently taking place.

The Harry S. Truman Birthplace State Historic Site preserves the small frame house where Harry S. Truman was born, along with furnishings from the period when he lived there. Along with the museums, historic routes, and buildings, this site offers another way to explore the region’s history without focusing on just one period.
