In southeastern Missouri, Mingo National Wildlife Refuge lies in Stoddard and Wayne counties. The Swampwalk Nature Trail is an accessible boardwalk system that winds for 0.8 miles through a bottomland hardwood forest. The clearly stated trail length provides a concrete measure for planning a nature outing; at the same time, the trail brings the wetland forest into focus.

The Mingo National Wildlife Refuge visitor center is located 1.5 miles north of Puxico on State Highway 51/MO-51. Check the route before you travel.

Wetlands and Wildlife

The Duck Creek Conservation Area encompasses 1,500 acres of open marshland. It is managed to provide a variety of food and shelter for migratory and resident wetland wildlife. Otter Slough is one of only a few remaining cypress-tupelo swamps in Missouri. The Otter Slough Conservation Area is home to wading birds, shorebirds, eagles, and wetland mammals. Open marshes and a rare type of swamp offer contrasting landscapes; the wildlife groups provide another way to explore the wetlands.

The 84-acre Holly Ridge Natural Area protects 26 rare or endangered plant species. This makes plant conservation a concrete complement to the focus on wetland wildlife. Visitors who also appreciate landscapes for their plant life will find a distinct focus here.

Ridges, Views, and Trails

The Crowley’s Ridge Conservation Area is located on Crowley’s Ridge, a peninsula of gentle hills that stretches through the otherwise flat plains of the Missouri Bootheel. At the edge of Crowley’s Ridge, the Holly Ridge Conservation Area offers panoramic views of the Bootheel plains to the east. The contrast between gentle hills and flat plains adds a different landscape perspective to the wetlands.

More than 7 miles of multi-use trails at the Holly Ridge Conservation Area are open to biking, horseback riding, and hiking. Check the current trail status and seasonal restrictions before setting out. The area also includes a permanent archery range with target distances of 10, 20, 30, and 40 yards, as well as a broadhead target. Check whether the range is currently available before you travel.

The trail lengths represent different scales: the Swampwalk is 0.8 miles long, while the trail system at the Holly Ridge Conservation Area covers more than 7 miles. This lets you compare the listed distances with the scope of your planned nature outing; for Holly Ridge, trail status and seasonal restrictions remain important.

Culture and History

The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of the nation's military newspaper. It has more than 10,000 square feet of multimedia exhibition space. The focus is therefore on the history of a particular newspaper rather than military history in general.

The Stoddard County Civil War Memorial Cemetery in Bloomfield has 150 grave markers for Confederate and Union soldiers. Tours of the Old Stoddard County Courthouse are available by appointment only.

The Stoddard County Fair features rides and entertainment as well as food, exhibits, and animals. Since the program may change, check the current dates and offerings before visiting.
