Five designated safe swimming areas make Stockton Lake a distinctive destination for days by the water: Stockton Beach, Orleans Trail Beach, Ruark Bluff Beach, Cedar Ridge Beach, and Masters Beach. Access rules may vary by season; check the current rules before swimming.

Stockton Lake: Swimming and Water Sports

Stockton Lake covers 24,900 acres. In addition to its designated swimming areas, Stockton State Park offers water skiing as another activity. This provides a range of ways to enjoy the water, without assuming that swimming and water sports are the same kind of experience.

The park’s location is also distinctive: Stockton State Park sits on a peninsula extending north between the Big Sac and Little Sac arms of Stockton Lake. This describes the setting more precisely than a general idea of a lakeshore: the lake’s two arms shape the surrounding landscape. Stockton State Park Campground is in Cedar County.

Historic Sites and Local Stories

In El Dorado Springs, the Wayside Inn Museum is housed in a former hotel that opened there in 1882. Its historical exhibits are spread across ten rooms and two halls. The former hotel building and its current use as a museum provide two distinct points of reference in time: the building’s opening in the 19th century and its present role as a place for historical exhibits.

The Wayside Inn Museum’s visitor season runs from the first Saturday in May through the last Sunday in October; visits are scheduled Thursday through Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. Before you travel, check whether the museum is accessible during these hours.

In Stockton, the Cedar County Historical Society operates a local history museum and a genealogical research center. The museum schedules visits on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as on the last Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. Before driving there, confirm whether a visit is possible during these hours. This lets you choose your focus: general local history or genealogical research.

Other historic sites were added to the National Register of Historic Places in different years. The Caplinger Mills Historic District was listed in 1993. For the Stockton Community Building, Cedar County records December 10, 1998, as the listing date. The two dates belong to different places and should not be conflated into a single history.

Festival, Black Walnuts, and El Dorado Springs

Stockton’s Black Walnut Festival takes place every September. The documented 2023 edition was held at Stockton City Park; check the festival dates when planning a trip. Hammons Emporium in Stockton is also connected to black walnuts: the business is a café, coffee shop, and gift shop, and offers an extensive selection of black walnut products. The regional theme is featured both at the annual festival and in a specific local business.

El Dorado Springs also has a distinct origin story: the town was founded around a spring that was believed to have medicinal value. This is a historical attribution, not a claim about any present-day medical effect. For a different recreational activity, the town has the Gene Pray Memorial Golf Course, a public nine-hole golf course.

Another specific point of reference for finding your way around Stockton is the town’s location at the intersection of State Highways 32 and 39. Together with the museums, the festival, and the different experiences at Stockton Lake, this offers several distinct themes to explore in Cedar—from scenery and water sports to local history and black walnuts.
