Seven historic buildings and museums are part of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum Properties; their Museum Gallery displays 15 original paintings by Norman Rockwell. This connection between Mark Twain sites and other traces of culture defines Hannibal. In Marion County, biographical stories, historic settlements, caves, and outdoor experiences add to the picture.

From Palmyra’s first log cabin to Historic ILASCO
Benjamin Vanlandingham, the community’s first non-Indigenous settler, built Palmyra’s first log cabin in 1818. Historic ILASCO tells a different local story: the ethnically diverse town was established in 1903, when immigrants came to work at the Atlas Portland Cement Company.
Explore Historic ILASCO on a self-guided walking tour; guided group tours are available by appointment. If you are planning a group tour, confirm arrangements in advance, as they may change. Hannibal is also part of the 50 Miles of Art corridor, a scenic drive along Highway 79 that includes Louisiana and Clarksville.
Caves and outdoor activities
At Mark Twain Cave, a 60-minute guided tour leads through an easy-to-walk, electrically lit cave. At the Mark Twain Cave Complex, visitors can search for gemstones in a 50-foot sluice. The set duration of the guided cave tour contrasts with gemstone searching in the sluice—two different options to consider when planning an outing.
The J. Thad Ray Memorial Wildlife Area has a field archery range with ten targets. Bicycles are allowed on the Soap Hollow Trail in Riverview Park; trail conditions can change, so check them before cycling. Lover’s Leap offers scenic views, adding a picturesque lookout to the area’s cultural and active experiences.
