On July 7, 1928, sliced bread was first sold at Bench’s Chillicothe Baking Company. The Home of Sliced Bread Welcome Center is located at the original site of the Chillicothe Baking Company and houses one of the original bread-slicing machines. Here, a precisely dated historical moment and a tangible object come together.

History in Exhibits and Images

The Grand River Historical Society Museum tells the stories of the people who shaped Livingston County in a 9,600-square-foot facility. The objects on display include artifacts from Indigenous peoples and a mammoth tooth found in Livingston County. A railroad exhibit featuring a working train whistle adds another glimpse into regional history.

Murals also tell stories of the past: The Murals of Chillicothe features more than 25 hand-painted images about Chillicothe’s history. Each mural serves as a time capsule of what once was. In the host city of Chillicothe, the Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery provides a venue for art exhibitions. Its gift shop carries works by local artists—a further facet of the cultural scene.

A yearly highlight on the events calendar is Chautauqua in the Park at Simpson Park. It features food, a farmers market, handmade crafts, art and live entertainment. Event dates may change, so check the dates before your trip if you plan to attend.

Rock Cliffs, Wetlands and Activities

In northwest Livingston County, Poosey Conservation Area is home to fern-covered rock cliffs. The area also includes Indian Creek Community Lake, with a floating, accessible fishing pier. The rocky landscape and the lake reveal two distinct sides of the same conservation area: striking cliffs and a place where fishing by the water takes center stage.

Fountain Grove Conservation Area offers a different focus. Its wetlands provide opportunities for birdwatching. Alongside the rock cliffs, visitors can also explore habitats where birds can be observed.

Other recreational options range from a water park to a golf course. Chilli Bay Water Park features slides, play areas and a lazy river. Green Hills Golf Course is an 18-hole course with classic links-style challenges. It includes a 17-acre lake and two ponds, as well as a clubhouse, a golf shop and a snack bar.

Choose Your Focus

The themes are distinct: cultural history comes to life through a precise sales date, exhibits and murals; nature is on display in rock cliffs and wetlands. The water park and golf course round out these discoveries with clearly defined recreational options. If you’re looking for a vacation rental for your stay, these interests can help you get started: consider which of these themes you’d like to shape your visit, and tailor your search accordingly.
