West Point Lake is surrounded by deep forests and rolling fields. It stretches for 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia border, with a shoreline of about 525 miles. A range of recreational activities are available on the water: fishing for bass, catfish, crappie and bream, as well as sailing, windsurfing and motorboating. You can also explore the region on land, along trails, at historic sites and in museums.

West Point Lake: Fishing, Water Sports and Trails

The activity that appeals to you can shape how you experience the lake. There are different ways to access fishing spots: McGee Bridge Recreation Area has a fishing pier, while Sunny Point Recreation Area provides access for shore fishing. If you want to head out on the water by boat, Troup County Pyne Road Recreation Park has the Pyne Road Park Mega Ramp, a boat ramp. Highland Marina offers boat rentals at West Point Lake; check before your trip whether rentals are available during your visit.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains four campgrounds at the lake. Their facilities are available to registered campers. Several trails with different features are available for exploring on land: The Thread is non-motorized and intended for walking, running and cycling. The Lakeside Trails extend for eleven miles through challenging terrain at West Point Lake. A multi-use trail network offers lake views and is open to horseback riders, mountain bikers, trail runners and hikers. When planning, you can compare activities, trail lengths and terrain rather than treating the trails as interchangeable options.

Museums and Architectural History

The Archaeological Replica Garden at the Biblical History Center features full-scale reconstructions of structures relevant to daily life in biblical times. No reservations are required for a self-guided visit to the garden. The Legacy Museum on Main has a different focus: it traces the history of West Georgia from its earliest inhabitants and the Woodland and Creek American Indian tribes to the present day. Admission is free.

The LaGrange Art Museum is housed in an iconic 1892 jail building and features exhibitions by renowned and regional artists. Admission is free here, too. Together, the three institutions offer different ways to explore architecture, art and the region’s history—from reconstructions of daily life in biblical times and the history of West Georgia to exhibitions in a former jail building.

Traces of Hogansville and Other Historic Sites

The Hogansville Tower Trail passes a cast-concrete water tower. It was built in 1916 for the local John Hines canning factory and also served the town’s first water supply system. An annual 5K race follows the trail and runs through the historic downtown of Hogansville. The combination of a distinctive structure and a running route also makes the Tower Trail appealing to visitors who prefer to discover local history along a specific trail.

Fort Tyler was the last Confederate fort captured by the Union. A marked trail leads to the site of the small earthwork, where visitors can explore the positions of the three guns. Bellevue offers a different perspective on architectural history: the grand antebellum home was built between 1852 and 1855 in the Greek Revival style and is a National Historic Landmark. The Callaway Memorial Tower, also known as the Callaway Monument, was built in 1929 as a tribute to textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway.

Wine from the Region

PaBella’s Winery produces red and white wines and offers wine slushies. Wine made from grapes grown in its own vineyard is served by the glass or as a tasting. As visitor offerings may change, it is recommended that you check the latest information before your visit. The winery adds a culinary touch to the options available among the lake, trails and history, without requiring a set sightseeing itinerary.
