At the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area, the state-owned land covers 2,623 acres. At the Grand Bay Wetland Education Center, visitors can learn more about wetland habitats. Here, nature and learning come together: the focus is not only on a landscape, but also on the habitats that shape it. If you are interested in wetlands, this is a great place to start.
Landscape, Wildlife and Water
Wild Adventures in Valdosta offers a different focus. The attraction spans 170 acres and includes habitats for hundreds of exotic animals. Festivals and events are also part of the program; Kidzpalooza and Phobia are examples. Specific event dates may vary. This brings two different nature-focused experiences together: Grand Bay offers insight into wetland habitats, while Wild Adventures puts animal habitats in the spotlight.
River access also gives the region a distinct focus. Knights Ferry Boat Ramp provides access to the Withlacoochee River via Knight's Ferry Road on the west side of Lowndes County. Troupville Boat Ramp provides access to the Little River on the border between Lowndes and Brooks counties. The two access points therefore differ mainly in the river they reach and their stated location.
Local History and Events
Most of Hahira's original architecture has been preserved in the downtown area. A variety of family-friendly special events are also held there throughout the year; dates for individual events may vary. A historic milestone is the first Honey Bee Festival, held in Hahira in 1982. The downtown area therefore combines a visible architectural heritage with an event calendar; you can check the dates of individual events when planning your trip.
Hahira has seven parks within its city limits. Park amenities include play equipment, picnic benches, sports fields, green spaces, a boardwalk and a skate park. This range offers different ways to spend time outdoors, from play and sports areas to green spaces. You can choose which ones suit your visit based on your interests.
Lake Park brings lakes and hiking trails into focus. A special tradition is the annual Lake Park Christmas Tour on the second weekend of December. It includes local shops and homes; check the specific event dates when planning your trip. Local history is also present: the Lake Park Area Historical Society Museum is housed in a building dating from 1890.
Architecture, Art and Regional History
The Crescent features several striking architectural details: the building was constructed in 1898 and has a circular veranda with 13 columns representing the original American colonies. The grounds also include demonstration gardens, an octagonal schoolhouse and a chapel. The Crescent is home to Valdosta's garden clubs and hosts special events throughout the year; the event schedule may change.
Those interested in art can find works by visual artists in six separate galleries at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. Tours are available by prior appointment. The Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum offers a different focus: it has nearly 10,000 square feet of exhibits and research materials on local history.
Valdosta is in southern Georgia on Interstate 75 and is a good starting point for exploring the Georgia Grown Trail on Highway 41. When choosing a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on: wetlands and river access, animal habitats, or history and culture. That way, you can plan around the discoveries that interest you most.
