Lake Seminole lies at the southern end of Seminole County, where the Flint and Chattahoochee rivers converge to form the Apalachicola River. The lake covers 37,500 acres and was created by the construction of the Woodruff Seminole Site.
Lake Seminole and Nature by the Water
Seminole State Park is located on Lake Seminole. Its facilities include a sandy beach for swimming, and a nature trail passes by gopher tortoise burrows. The park brings together two distinct nature experiences: spending time by the water and following a trail that runs alongside the tortoises’ burrows. If you’re choosing between the beach and the nature trail, these are specific options to consider rather than a general promise of a nature experience.
Another notable landscape is the Lake Seminole Wildlife Management Area in Seminole County. In July 2023, a land purchase of 894 acres expanded the area.
Donalsonville and Its Architectural History
The Donalsonville Historic District includes historic commercial, community, and industrial buildings, as well as other resources connected with the development of downtown Donalsonville. The district retains a high degree of historic integrity.
One specific building with its own historical designation is the Seminole County Courthouse, built in Donalsonville in 1922. It is a Beaux-Arts-style building. The historic district includes several historic resources, while the courthouse is a single building. The Olive Theatre opened in 1928. As of August 2026, the Olive Theatre was temporarily closed; if you’re planning a visit, please check its current accessibility in advance.
Events in October 2026
One specific event to add to your calendar is the 2026 Annual Donalsonville/Seminole County Harvest Festival, scheduled for October 17, 2026. As part of the festival, the annual Farm Tour takes place on October 15, hosted by the UGA Extension Office, the Seminole County Young Farmers, and Seminole County FFA. The festival also includes an annual recipe contest. Other past events with confirmed dates included the 2nd Lakeside Festival & Team Bass Tournament, scheduled for May 4, 2024, at Reynolds Landing, and the Firehouse BBQ Festival, held March 14–15, 2025, an event sanctioned by the Georgia BBQ Association. A portion of the proceeds from the Boots & Roots Rodeo benefits both the local chamber of commerce and the community’s youth.
The Farm Tour and the festival take place on different days. If you’d like to plan your trip around these events, note both dates separately and check the times in advance.
