James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park brings together two distinct natural features: it is nestled in the Chattahoochee National Forest and Georgia’s geologically significant Ridge-and-Valley region. It also offers fishing at two stocked lakes. Chattooga County is home to the park. If you want to combine geological character with a specific water-based activity on your trip, the park offers a clear nature focus.

Landscape and Water

For a different kind of water experience, there is the Lower Chattooga River Canoe/Kayak Trail. It begins at the launch site on Lyerly Dam Road in Lyerly, Georgia. This gives you two distinct activities to choose from: fishing at the State Park’s lakes or paddling a water route designated for canoes and kayaks. Both launch sites along the trail have parking, solar-powered, waterless restrooms, boat ramps, picnic tables and trash cans. Since facilities may change over time, check current amenities before your trip.

Art and Architecture

Paradise Garden adds a unique artistic setting. Howard Finster created it in Summerville; the site covers 2.5 acres. Finster began Paradise Garden in 1961, and the site remained a focus of his work for more than 30 years. This long span is part of its story: Paradise Garden represents not just a single moment, but an artistic practice tied to this place over decades.

Sardis Baptist Church offers a different perspective on architectural heritage. It is a well-preserved example of a rural church with a gabled façade and Italianate features. It is also a rare, richly ornamented rural church that has remained a functioning building since its construction. Its form, design and state of preservation give architecture enthusiasts specific aspects to consider when interpreting the church.

The Chattooga County Courthouse in Summerville offers an architectural contrast: built in 1909 in the Neoclassical Revival style, it replaced the original courthouse dating from 1840. In 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Its history can therefore be traced through three dates: the predecessor building, its replacement and its later addition to the register.

Railroad Heritage in Summerville

Historic Summerville Depot is in downtown Summerville, next to Dowdy Park. The arrival of the TVRM Passenger Train is a highlight of the depot’s festivals; visitors may also see Summerville’s turntable in operation. If you are planning a trip around these events, check the current event calendar.

The Summerville Santa Special also departs from the depot. This seasonal ride runs every weekend in December and lasts 75 minutes. Its duration helps you plan how to fit this activity into your schedule; before organizing your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year.
