At Spielboden, visitors can experience marmots at close range; at Allalin, the focus is on high mountains and glaciers. There are also themed trails and insights into the history of the Saas Valley. The various excursion destinations each have a different focus—from wildlife watching to virtual glacier experiences.
High-altitude destinations and glaciers
The Allalin excursion destination lies above Saas-Fee, surrounded by four-thousanders. Its highlights can be reached by the Metro Alpin. At 3,500 metres, the destination features a revolving restaurant; at Mittelallalin, there is a virtual glacier experience at the same altitude. Allalin therefore offers both a special restaurant and a digital introduction to the world of glaciers.
At Längfluh, at an altitude of 2,869 metres, you can get especially close to the glaciers. Längfluh is about 20 minutes from the village by cable car. From the mountain station, the glacier lakes can be reached in around 15 minutes. The two time estimates refer to different sections: first the cable car ride from the village to Längfluh, then the walk from the mountain station to the lakes.
The seasonal Glacier Experience Tour also starts at Längfluh station. It leads onto the Fee Glacier, with participants secured to a mountain guide’s rope. As this is a seasonal activity, check before your trip whether the tour is running.
Tracking marmots and the weather
The Spielboden viewpoint is an 8-minute cable car ride from Saas-Fee. Marmots live at an altitude of 2,488 metres and can be seen at close range. The Murmeliweg trail shares interesting facts about the animals and adds a themed perspective to the encounter.
Another themed trail is called “Eddie and the Mountain Weather.” Its eight interactive stations explore weather phenomena such as snow, wind and permafrost. The stations make the trail a discovery experience in its own right, alongside marmot watching: the focus here is on alpine weather.
Saas history and alpine trails
The Saas Museum combines modernised rooms with interactive experiences exploring the history of the Saas Valley. One section illustrates the importance of cable cars in the region’s tourism history. The building itself is also part of local history: the museum is housed in the former rectory of Saas-Fee, built in 1732.
Other alpine highlights range from the Saas-Fee ski area, which reaches an altitude of 3,600 metres, to the route near Hannig. This route crosses alpine terrain and offers flowing sections, nature trails and exciting trail sections. When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance glacier destinations, wildlife watching, culture and a range of alpine activities, without having to fit everything into the same day.
Accommodation and planning your visit
The SaastalCard is also relevant when planning your stay: from your first overnight stay, it gives you free use of the mountain railways in the Saas Valley, except for the Metro Alpin, as well as the PostBus in the Saas Valley, for the duration of your stay. If you plan to visit Allalin by Metro Alpin, bear this exception in mind when planning your transport.
To decide what to do on a particular day, you can check visitor information about open hiking trails, bike trails and leisure facilities, as well as mountain railways. This lets you compare the available excursion destinations with the latest information about what is open.
