Staldenried is considered a traditional Swiss village with picturesque chalets and local markets. A stay here can be combined with trails and experiences around Gspon. To travel between the village and the hamlet, there is an approximately one-hour hike and an aerial cableway.

Between Staldenried and Gspon

The first section of the Stalden–Staldenried–Gspon aerial cableway is the only public transport from Stalden to Staldenried. The second section then climbs steeply to Gspon, gaining 737 metres in elevation and reaching the hamlet at 1,893 metres above sea level. Check the cableway timetable when planning your trip.

The hike from the village of Staldenried to Gspon takes about an hour. St. Anna Chapel in Gspon can be reached by cableway from Stalden via Staldenried. There are therefore two different ways to get to Gspon: a hike with a stated walking time or a ride on the aerial cableway.

Chapels, art and the cultural trail

St. Anna Chapel stands in the hamlet of Gspon at an elevation of about 1,900 metres and was built in 1691. Its Baroque carved altar has been protected at both federal and cantonal level since 1956 and is a work of Valais woodcarving. The chapel’s construction history and its altar each give it a distinct cultural and historical significance.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Bildji was built in 1727 and is dedicated to Mary of Victory. During renovations in 1997, its ceiling frescoes were uncovered; they are considered highly unique. Here, the frescoes, their uncovering and the dedication to Mary take centre stage, whereas St. Anna Chapel is associated with its protected carved altar.

The Walser Trail runs from Simplon via Gspon into the Saas Valley and on to Italy. As a long-distance cultural route, it offers a different perspective on Gspon than the local hiking trails: the hamlet lies on a section of trail that connects several regions.

Another landmark in Gspon is the Ottmar Hitzfeld GsponArena, Europe’s highest football pitch.

The Pflati Trail and a mountain bike loop

The Pflati Trail is a hiking route between Gspon and Finilu. Using village and high-altitude gardens, it showcases the cultivation of various vegetables, berries and flowers. The trail also passes species-rich meadows and pastures. The gardens thus offer a different side of the route from the open meadows and pastures it also passes.

If you’re mountain biking, you can plan a ride along the signposted Gspon Panorama Trail. This circular route goes from Gspon to Gebidum Lake and back to Gspon. Check the route conditions before setting off.

Experiences and relaxation in Gspon

Gspotti’s Adventure Park invites children to play, climb and discover nature. Wierli is located at the tree line in Gspon and serves as a local recreation area; however, it is not a swimming lake. Those planning a break there can enjoy a different kind of outing than at the adventure park: Wierli has an official Swiss Family barbecue area with space for families and larger groups. Before visiting these places, check local conditions and the condition of the barbecue area.
